I've been trying to replace the timing cover gasket for a while now but have been unable to get the crank bolt out to get to it. I tried all the old tricks, PB blaster, huge breaker bars with 6 foot cheater pipes, a hammer and chisel, I tried heating it with propane torches, the starter trick, 600lb ft torque impact gun from harbor freight (HF). The Dang bolt would just laugh at me in my face. Finally I picked up a 3 inch air cutter from HF and I was able to angle it in enough to get me just shy of the pulley. Then I hit it with a 2lb hammer and steel chisel and I was able to spread the gap just a bit. After all that trouble I hit it with the starter trick one last time and VOILA!! Darn thing came right off. There's some kind of red stuff on there I'm assuming the numb nuts previous owner rubbed it down with thread locker.

I can't believe how many hours I spent on this thing like a monkey making sweet love to a football. I'm just glad this nightmare is finally over and I can work on fixing this pesky oil drip.

Make sure you take the radiator out to give you plenty of room to work.
I measured about 7 inches between the bolt head and the front of the truck to work in, just enough room for the HF earthquake impact gun and short 19mm impact socket from craftsman.
LC engineering sells replacement bolts for 9$

I hope this will help some of you guys. Good luck and don't get discouraged just find a better tool.

 

 

Good job, you showed perseverance. Most folks would have gotten discouraged and quit. I like your style, just get a better tool and try harder!
