Air Compressors

I have decied it is probally time to retire my SLOW ARB pump, it works fine, but it too SLOW..

So, looking at my options and space I have decided that a ViAir is the way to go.

Here are my top choices

400C: 2.54 CFM 33% duty cycle 35 seconds 85-105 psi; 2min 55sec 0-105 psi (1.34CFM @ 100psi)
450C: 1.66 CFM 100% duty cycle 58 seconds 85-105 psi; 4min 20sec 0-105psi (.94CFM @ 100psi)

Do we really need a 100% duty cycle for offroad use? I have 2 2.5gal tanks, so very rarely will the compressor run for more than 10 minutes.

Since you already have a compressor, why don't you go with CO2 instead of upgrading it? If you run the bottle out, you still have a serviceable compressor (albeit slow) for your air needs. CO2 also provided the ability to run air tools and other high SCFM needs.

Co2 takes up much more space than a compressor. CO2 is good, but its not what I want to run... I still like having an air compressor..

I guess that's my point - you already have a compressor as a back up. For not much more than the Viair, you can run CO2 and have enough SCFM to run air tools, inflate tires rapidly, set beads - all kinds of important stuff. Only compressor that can do that is the Oasis, and it is BIG $$$$$$$$ and takes up a ton of space. Just my $0.02

The 100% duty cycle comes in handy when you have to fill up your friends tires too.

I agree, but I am not willing to loose more space. If I could run the tank sideways maybe... But I have enough junk to take with me camping as it is; and I dont really need to run air tools on the trail, just have a big enough reserve to set a bead, and fill my tires..

VMAC compressors can do that too (quite easily), although I'd hate to see the price tag on one, and they only make them for Big 3 trucks...

if u want a good compressor then save up for an oasis, it puts out 14 cfm i have the the hp 1000 with a 1.5 gal tank and it shuts off at 150 psi and activates again at 120, takes about 10 seconds to reach 150 again, takes about minute to fill my 285/75/r16 tire from 15 to 35 psi

I agree with the Oasis, we tested that unit against a CO2, both aired down to 12 PSI, started at the exact same time to fill up, stoped at the exact same time, the tires are the same size, when done, both were filled to the exact same PSI, that Oasis is exactly as fast as CO2, and you never have to get it filled IF i can sell my CO2 set up and my Extreme outback, Im getting the Oasis, heck I may just get it anyway, then worry about selling the others later. Oasis all the way.

I got a Viair 450C with a 2.5 gal. tank. I think that it will suffice for my needs for now. I haven't installed it yet. I only just tried out the gears and lockers last week! I'll keep y'all posted.

what you dont take your own air ? or do you just bum everything you need off of others ? some of us like to be prepared, you never know whats going to happen or whats going to break.
I learned that in the Boy Scouts, go prepared, then really learned what would happen, if your not prepared in the Army. we are still talking about air compressors ?????

i would definitely agree with Ric, I carry both CO2 and a back up compressor, (front locker compessor has a quick connect on it for emergencys) better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!

The Oasis is an electric air compressor, it isn't belt driven

I have been running a 100% duty cycle Thomas compressor for almost 10 years now and glad I got it, 2.2CFM:

I run a 2 gallon tank and that is essientially nothing when it comes to filling tires, maybe shaves 1 minute off airing up all 4. While I can fill my tires in 7-10 minutes, on several occasions, I have been the only one in a group with a running compressor and have had to fill upwards of 6-7 sets of tires without a stop.

On the 33% duty cycle, you need to check what the on and off times for that cycle time are. If it is 20 minutes on and 40 minutes off, that would be reasonable, but if it is 5 on and 10 off, that would not be very good.
