Add Wheel Speed Sensors to Toyota Ten Bolt
As part of a tech school student project I need to detect the rotating speed of the rear wheels on a Legends race car. These cars use shortened Toyota "ten bolt" rear axles. Is it possible/practical to install ABS sensors, or similar rotation sensors, on these axles?

There are differentials (for ABS equipped vehicles) with a single speed sensor mounted over the ring gear. You could put one of those in and use the existing sensor (reads speed off the teeth of the ring gear).

x2 - my '93 4Runner has rear ABS and a sensor built into the top of the thirdmember

So it sounds I need an ABS rear end because it's not practical to install ABS sensors on a non-ABS rear end. Is that right?
What does an ABS setup look like anyway? I seem to recall that ABS has a wheel with teeth, kind of like a gear, mounted on the axles. Sensors aimed at the teeth generate electrical pulses as the teeth on the "gear" pass by. The pulses are read by a computer. Is that right? I just don't recall where the gear wheel is located. Is it made onto the axles? Or can it be installed on the axles?

The legends cars need 6 5/8 rears (IIRC, i may be slightly off) you cannot drop a Toyota 8" diff into them. I think the legends cars are only allowed to run certain gears and housings too, so dropping in a truck housing isn't an option either.
