97 runner has a whine in the rearend

The rear end is a little noisy, does anyone know what could cause it. It whines and howls a bit.

Check the rear diff fluid level by taking off the top fill plug (diff oil should be up to the opening), if it is low you may have devloped a bad pinion bearing. Somtimes this is in conjuction with a cloged diff breather and leaking axel seals.

is this something that just started or you bought the truck like that? If the gears have been changed ...the ring and pinion may not be matched, that will cause a howl.
