it tells me that the CEL (check engine light) is either burned out or the bulb was removed to hide an issue.
first things first - get a replacement bulb and pull the code to see what errors the computer is throwing at you.
it could be anything from a MAF sensor failure (sounds possible) to an O2 sensor, to a crank sensor, vacuum leak, bad gas, bad/intermittent injector, etc...

ahhh... sorry.
hmmmm... No CEL, but still stalling out?
you've cleaned the MAF, checked spark plugs, etc...
it sounds almost like it could be an intermittent vacuum leak. that's a tough one to diagnose w/o getting about 50' of hose and just start replacing them...

a friend of mine has an F-150 (like a 92 or something) that had a crack in a vacuum hose. Took him months to figure out what was wrong, but in the end it was like a $5 fix.
Take a good look at all hoses like bamachem said. Look for any cracks or anything. Only problem is, somtimes they are there but you can't see them.... maybe try it with the engine running and not running.
OH BTW yes, it is supposed to smoke like crazy.
I put way more than i was supposed to, had a CEL and at one point driving down the road i couldn't see a car about 20 feet behind me because there was too much smoke.
And one question for anyone that knows more than me (most people here) Could he still be throwing codes without a CEL?????

I read somewhere that soapy water is a good way to check vacuum leaks. I may try that next, pour the water in certain areas. But like you said bamachem, lots of hose!
chadbobb, The $5 fix is why I'm hesitant to bring it back to the mechanic. I can just see him replacing things that don't really need to be replaced until the problem is fixed.
I would also like to know if the CEL has to be on to show any codes. I read somewhere that Autozone has a free code reader that you can use. Anyone try this before?
