5-speed or Automatic: which one do you have?
#22
Why shift if you don't have to. That way you have the other hand to play with some cool toys in your rig or to adjust the stereo or hold the remote, or ...well...you get the idea. Auto for me. :fireman:

Automatic for me. I don't want to have to shift the truck. I think the auto is better for off-roading and for towing. I am certainly not lacking any torque with the S/C. If I owned a sports car, that would be a different story. That would be a manual shift.

this is the first auto ive ever owned. love it in traffic but thats about it. 5spd are more efficient with much better control on throttle and back pressure which i miss. but ive got a nice honda to cure my speed cravings.

Stick all the way!!
I like telling the truck what gear to use rather than having the truck guess what I want it to do. I can see that hill up ahead, the transmition cannot. I can see the top of the hill, the tranny can't. Why downshift 50 feet before the top of a hill just to upshift 2 seconds later.
Teaching females to drive a 5 speed is an easy way to impress them.
Downshifting on downhills saves the brakes from overheating. Its necessary on steep mountain passes that Colorado is full of.
Driving an automatic isn't really driving, its just steering.
The vehicles i've owned:
'86 Toyota Tercel 4 speed
'85 Toyota Tercel 5 speed
'83 Suzuki GS 450 E 6 speed
'86 Kawasaki KLR 250 5 speed
'87 Toyota truck 5 speed
'99 Honda XR 650 L 5 speed
'85 Subaru GL 10 5 speed
I will NEVER EVER EVER buy an automatic.
I might consider buying one for a wife in the future if she is a good girl and can't figure out shifting. I'd do everthing in my power to teach her to shift first though.

I see this thread came to life again so I'm joining in this time around.
All I've ever had is 5-speeds so I can't even remember what it's like not to shift. You get very good at multi-tasking after a while. I can talk on my cell phone, drink my Starbucks, hit my kids sitting in the back seat, and shift my 5 speed just fine! Kidding!
I would never let someone learn to drive a stick on my truck. No way!

5 speed all the way. PERIOD. And I agree with all the other 5 speed postings. My last vehicle started out as an auto, and when the tranny went out, I put in a 5 speed. It gained a top speed from 83 to 110mph. That was what convinced me.

I spent 6 months looking for my 2000 5 spd 4 Runner....
Finally found it it Cali...
Flew out from Colorado and drove the thing back to the mountains where it belongs...the previous owner used it as a grocery getter...
Thank goodness it is finally in good hands...
Who wants an auto anyway?

5-speed here. I wanted a standard and nothing else. I got my runner after smashing my '86 Mustang 5.0, 5spd. so I wanted all the power I could get out of my Yota. Plus standards are just cooler
