4 month old Optima Red top 34R Drained?
So I've had this thing for less than 4 months. About 3 months ago I moved closer to work so I only drive my truck on the weekends. I've been noticing its starting kinda slow like a battery with low juice. I just measure my battery it 11.3 volts. WTF?
Thanks,
Jim

You know, I have a Red Top in my Maxima. It was about 8 months old. All fo a sudden it left me stranded. I was excahing it and some dude with a Porsche came in with a Red Top and his was less than a year old and crapped out on him too.

What the deuce?
That's too bad, for the price and the supposedly good reputation of those, you would think that there would be some sort of warranty for them or something?
the crap batteries you can buy at walmart or parts stores usually have a longer warranty, if not a lifetime

Its not just red tops... its all optima batteries. I talked to a guy who is a manager of a huge battery store locally and he said there getting bad optimas that are brand new from the manufacture all the time. There just mass producing them so much that the quality control went down. I dont know why there so expensive. They are warrantied for at least a couple years for free replacement.

This just seems wierd to me, this was one of the things that I was going to put on my truck, kind of a "fix it before it breaks" and never have to worry about it again things, but I'm not going to go out and spend $$$ on a battery that might die in a few months
but I guess that I'll just wait until my battery dies on me, and if I'v got the money, then maybe
nice SV, by the way

Red tops are not deep cycle batteries. Drain them and they go dead and may not come back to life. Put a little solar battery charger panel on the truck and that'll keep it topped up. Also, see if you have any excessive current drains (with everything off). Any current in excess of about 20 mA (0.020 amps) is enough to kill a battery in a few weeks of sitting.

People need to remember that these batteries "redtops" and not meant to discharged over and over again. It will ruin the battery. If you run systems or various accessories, you should get a Deep cycle. You can get Deepcycles that are made by other brands that will last a very long time if taken care of. I recently went to Costco to check out the Optimas. I thought they were running like $109. They wanted $140 for a redtop! WOW.

I went and got a 1000CCA tow truck battery in my beast (the biggest size we could shoehorn in)... my alt. failed on my way to work last week just after I left home and the batt. still carried me the 40km to work with no trouble and had the defrost fan/radio running most of the way too... did'nt have enough left to turn over again once I got there though...

wow, this is odd with all of ya'll having these bad optima batteries...i've ran a yellow top in my 4runner for over a year now, and it's done fine, even when going to spl competitions and producing 160+ db multiple times in the same day!

I once had an Optima Yellow Top in my Honda. About 9 months later, it suddenly died on me, with no warnings at all. That was on a little Honda. I'll never buy an Optima again. They're expensive, and I've learned quite a few people have had the same problem I've had with them.

The red tops, with the spiral cell technology are killed if you let them drain all the way down, if you drive your car rarely and the battery goes below a critical voltage it kills them. I am on about my third in 2 years on my tempest. I forgot to leave the charger on it and the alarm drained it and killed it. Good batteries just not for rarely driven cars. I think that is why people suggest the yellow top since it is a deep cycle type, and is less prone to damage at low voltage.

That is odd. I have the red top in my 4Runner for a year now. I have even ran 2500watts amp off one red top battery. The amp draw so much of current and from alternator. I upgraded bigger wires (multipes runs of 4guages wires). The funny thing is I bought the red top from wal mart! I, for one, would buy another optima battery.
