Thought you ment this coming Sunday...

Can't get anything right today... I bet heavily on IBM earnings at close. Sure enough, blow out earnings and forecast.
Stock is way down in after hours trading. Hopefully Mr. Market will regain his sanity by morning.

update...

DD just heard from the machinist, there's a crack in one of the heads. He found it after installing the new cams and getting things shimmed up.

So, it has to be stripped of parts and welded or we have to find a replacement.

That'll end up being at least another $500 and a couple of weeks.

_ARGH_

So... anyone have a line on a passenger side head for a 3.4L?

Anyone have an opinion on welding up heads? I don't have details on how bad the crack is or if it's actually penetrating into a port.

I swear to Gawd I'm gonna buy a Prius.

You'd get a charge out of that....

And soon it would be the hottest Prius in town. With skidplates.

Sorry to hear about that new problem. Was it on the same side as the burnt valve or whatever that was?

Drive it like you stole it, right Mark?

I suspect you would end up modding the hell out of a Prius too, now that they have the plug-in electric conversions and the like... but no matter how you slice it I have trouble seeing it being as fun as a "real" 4Runner...

On another note, any idea what caused your head to crack?

Nope. My info at this point is coming 2nd hand from DD and he's swamped at work. He'll find out more from the machinist tonight or this weekend.

This weekend we'll at least get the block back in, tranny mated back up, valve body in... Maybe DD and I can take turns pushing each other around his cul-de-sac for a while. One of us can make engine noises while the other makes SC noises.

...we'll have to find a 3rd to make engine-blowing-up noises.

You know we all wish you the best. Just couldn't resist the juxtaposition of no-wheels and alcohol.

Oh I know... I'm a lot better about it today than I was on Friday.

It's all good - I'm actually "somewhat amused" at how this is all flushing out. Of course, I'd be "wildly amused" if my checkbook wasn't about ready to fall apart...

22rte heads are prone to cracking... i know they used to clean up the crack and weld them up before new head castings started coming out, and people realized they could use a 22re head casting... i thikn you will be ok getting it tig'd together... but make sure it's done right so the crack doesnt spread!

I'm thinking that my "first mod" should have been the big clue. "What was it?" you ask? A throttle body spacer. That was the first $100 I wasted on this thing...

How's it going chief? Can you update?

You know, you need an operating theory as to what happened so you can change something, or do something differently, to avoid the problem, or catch it earlier..

The easy and obvious thought is that you just pushed the thing beyond its limits. Could be you just got the head hot.... but you would have seen that in the temp gauges. Maybe you ran it rich for a short time(s), which created hot spots. Tough one to figure.

Anyway, Sunday should be fun. Go Bears.

That's good, I'd be worried about a welded head. I have done some TIG welding on cast aluminum and even a small crack that you can bearly see will open up like the Grand Canyon when you get it close to melting temps. Also because the aluminum conducts heat so well warpage of the whole part can be a problem.

Sorry you're having such bad luck with it

hey all,

I'm on the road until Monday night and only have limited 'net access.

Short form is that the head i had the deal on was in marginal shape, so i had to find another one. It should have been delivered to DD yesterday.

RH, i agree... everything points to heat/lean, so that'll be the second thing i do. the first is to floor it in front of DD's and see if i can crack a tire loose.
