22re idle settings

I have an 85 toyota 22re. Someone before me adjusted the idle air screw I think and the idle mixture screw. That I know for sure because it is drilled out. I need to find out the base line settings for the idle. When the truck is cold it idles smooth as it warms up it will not idle as well and eventulally sound as a miss is occuring. That only happens at idle and it also seems to smell rich. Off idle the truck runs very well. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Tim

Do you have a tach? It should be around 750rpm when warm.

I do have a tach it reads about 1000rpm when engine is up to temp. My timing light says it is around 850? If I let it idle long enough when warm it sounds as if there is a miss. To me it sounds like a carbon fouled plug but the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air gap are all new and adjusted. I also ohmed out the injectors and checked the tps. All were in spec. when the engine was cold.

Does anyone know what the stock setting for the idle air screw and the idle mixture is? That would be of great help and a place to start. Thanks!!

I'm not around my vehicle the moment...at work (and on the internet...shhh!). But, it will be on the sticker under your hood...if the sticker is still there.

I'm having the same problem with mine 89 22re 5spd with 60k on a jasper reman. Was throwing an o2 sensor code but fixed that and it idles rough but idles at 850. New distributor, plugs, wires, o2 sensors, . Checked the timing and all is right with that. Going to have to start combing through the engine I guess

Did you try new plugs and wires?

How'd you fix your O2 code? Were you getting code 5?

The code was, IIRC, 21 and it turned out to be a bad ground

Idle Mixture

You might try counting the turns of the screw on the AFM then from one end screw half the total turns so at least physically the screw is in the middle. The air idle screw on the TB Should cause the idle to vary, unless you have a vacuum leak, the factory setting of my 85 22re is 750 idle but it idles a lot better at 950. For instance it tries to die when I put the Auto tranny in gear.
Have you ever taken aprt the Aux Air Valve? I need to compare my results of the air valve with someone else. I have read it is supposed to pass air all the time but it doesn't make much sense. By adding an o-ring I got it to not pass air when hot but the engine runs too rich then. Let me know if you look at the air valve(below the intake manifold). Thanks
