1st oil change on my 3VZE
Good morning Yotatech peeps.
So I did my first oil change on my 92 Runner last night. I barely have over 500 miles on the new motor but I have always thought its a good idea to change the oil to get rid of any molly lube that was used in the rebuilt and to get rid of any material that has come off the engine during the brake in period. I have done this on a couple of other motors I have built. Non Toyota related.
Boy was that fun!!! Draining the oil was not a problem. It was getting off the oil filter that had me crying! Lets just say my oil filter looked like an empty beer can that I crushed after drinking it.
I think when they designed the motor and decided were the oil filter was gonna be they forgot all together that the motor was going to be placed in a truck. Even when I was rebuilding the motor I thought....whats the big idea?? What are these guys on Yotatech complaining about? I can see where the oil filter goes with no problem! Yeah right! Thats with the motor out of the engine bay!
So I was busy complaining to myself that the space was so tight where the oil filter is I didnt even notice I was turning it the wrong way to get it off. LEFTY LOSEY RIGHTY TIGHTY!!! How many times have you said that to your self??? Hence the crushed beer can that came out.
Also I didnt think such a little oil filter could hold so much oil in it. There went my pretty repainted front suspension. And my new recall steering relyrod replacement. LOL! Nice and oily! Well that will keep the rust away!
Cant wait for the next oil change. Can you guys feel the sarcasm??
So now I'm just another guy complaining about my oil change. Still love my 4 Runner though.
Talk to you guys later!

I have about 200 miles on me and my sons rebuilt 3.0. The guy that did the machine work said to change the oil at 300 miles the first time, and at 3000 the second time. He also told me to use a special oil ($8.00/qt.) that is designed for breaking in motors for the first 300 miles and then to go to a racing oil that is high in zinc for the second 3000 miles. I wont have as much of a problem changing the filter as you did tho because ours is a 2wd. Still a pain though. Another thing that is a real pain on that motor is changing the # 6 spark plug. What in the heck were those design guys thinking?

a grinder to the inner fender works pretty well too. Then stop by your local truck stop and get a used mud flap from a big rig. cut it to fit the inner fender and bolt it in there. problem solved and tons of room. Makes for more room if you are installing headers too. I did it on both sides.

Yeah it gets harder and harder to do your own maintenence with newer vehicles. My '83 however...even the oil filter is super easy to get at compared to my '86.

oh man...You're so going to hell...
Edit: This would be in reply to AP4CHE. As far as I know 83 will be going to heaven, where there is no such thing as rust, and angels bring you performance cams on a silver platter.

Oil weight for the first change
Hello, I'm new here so I'm guessing my question might be in the wrong area. Anyway I have a 1990 4Runner with a rebuilt 3VZE coming up on 500 miles and I need to know which oil weight to use for the first change. Thanks

The supplier 123Motorz told me to use 20W-50. I'm not sure if it matters but I live in central CA so it's driven in a pretty mild climate.
