1986 4Runner DLX

I bought this 1986 in 2015 for $900 in Ga. The previous owner(trail only) purchased it from the original owner who had never trailed it. So needless to say it was in need of some care. I replaced the timing chain, throttle body boot, cleaned the air intake manifold, and replaced all vacuum lines. After 30,000 miles I decided to rebuild the engine(254,000 total) I rebuilt the engine last summer and have put about 10,000 miles since. I have also added a cheap amazon front bumper(bc it didnt have one), 31X 10.5 Cooper Adventurer Tires, Bilstein 5100 series shocks, rear seat, factory hitch, and bluetooth amplifier which also has a source button allowing me to maintain my factory toyota cassette deck. I have also replaced the front rotors, pads, wheel bearings, and rebuilt the aisin hubs. After the rebuild I developed the dreaded idle surge which after about two months I defeated. For me it turned out to be a combination of a few things. The TPS sensor would pass all tests but ended up being faulty, faulty air idle control valve, and the solenoids in my transmission were defective and being a self taught home mechanic I hadnt thumbed far enough in the ATM section of the FSM to discover the separate troubleshooting section. Rainy day at hunting camp.

1 year later

Lots of work, cleaning and fixing, finally got the topper painted. Almost matches, I'm good with it.

Joined years ago, I've been off and on, but definitely glad to be a part of this Forum. This was taken on a random trip up to the El Paso mountains close to me old town in california. This began a trend of adventures that would take us farther and farther out in and around the Mojave desert.
Heres the best picture I have after its re-awakening from 3 months in the garage installing the Chaos long travel. Shes got a long way to go and lots more planned. but as it is right now, its still a lot of fun to drive!

Pan-American 4Runner / Camper

Here's our '87 4Runner that has slowly become a part of the family...in 2012 we decided to drive it south and ended up driving it all the way to the tip of South America, across 15 countries and 27 border crossings. We lived and traveled in it for 2 years, sleeping inside the back. After we reached Tierra Del Fuego we ended up shipping it back to the US and I still daily drive it to work.

Thanks, those photos are just tweaked in the Prizm app. There's some fun effects on there.

We're doing well. Our big adventure since the Pan-Am has been parenthood and rekindling our careers. We're now expecting our second child in December! We're trying to rebuild our savings so we can soon take our little ones on some small adventures, but we have nothing big planned until we retire. It's exhausting starting all over again!

Here's a photo of our 2 year old helping me with the reconstruction of the 4Runner...we're trying to design it for family friendly adventures this time. It's slow progress for now, but I plan on updating the build thread soon.
