Prepping for 22R rebuild with goodies
and suspension
Forgot this vital info on above post. I am new to this forum but I believe I have read almost everything on line for the first gen Runners. I am about to get out of the military and head back to SC. I'll have a garage, tools and time once down. I am pulling the 22r and do a full rebuild. OME suspension is what I'm thinking with gears (still debating 4:86 or 5:29) Only want 31 or 32s for trail. E locker front and Detroit or such for rear. I want a somewhat street/trail rig. Not DD. I am open to any suggestions. Thanks
I am new to forum. I have had Toyotas all my life and have never been in a place for this expensive of a toy... Until now!!! Black Betty has only been in my life for about a week. Seems to be unmolested and bare bone stock aside from Cold air intake.
1989 2.4 EFI 22RE 5Spd.
I have 99 TJ springs on the way for Zuk mod.
Next BJ spacers for front and some tires with tread on them

Went muddin, wifes first time and tore it up.
Overheated driving home = expected
cracked main seal cover and lots of pressure washing since.
Attempted to repair that cover and oil leak but couldn't get the crank bolt loose. Broke 2 breaker bars and tried impact wrench along with draining the battery (starter bump method) Needless to say it was a costly trip but the Wife had fun so oh well, it's only money.
Buying this gem from a buddy of mine in two weeks. Has alot of stuff done to it already but needs some interior work but the truck is rust free and runs great! Will post more pictures later this is all I have right now
Wow, there's a lot of really nice 1st gen 4runners in this thread. Gives me ideas for mine. I've got an 85 runner that has 248,238 miles that I'm rebuilding and going to turn into a trail cruiser and camping truck. Can't wait till I can get mine running reliably so I can hit the trails.
I've been watching for a clean 1st Gen for a while (not a priority, more of a hobby). I've had 2 1st gens (back in college) and just sold my 3rd Gen. I happened to see this one but it is too far away... $1,100 to ship it! :/ Someone really needs to buy it and do a swap.
i bought this truck in september and have slowly been getting it sorted out .
im going to sell it when im done , for now though the body , paint and suspension with new tires have been redone.
more to come
Here's my 89 SR5 V6. I had a big crush on my now wife back in college but way before she would give me the time of day. One day she called me and asked if I would come look at her cousin's POS car because it wouldn't run. I went over and fell in love a second time. This thing was the POS she was talking about. Anyway, I fixed an alternator wire and begged her cousin to call me if her dad ever wanted to sell it.
12 years later and after her uncle had passed away unexpectedly, my wife's aunt called and said that she was having the wrecking yard come pick up the old 4Runner and that she had just heard about my plea to buy it all those years ago. I came running and gave her the $200 she asked for it plus another $100 for thinking about me.
Got it running on a couple cylinders a few days later, threw it in gear and drove it home like Rooster Cogburn on Little Blackie. A year and probably $1000 later I had her back up to snuff.
Just like my wife, I loved her the first time I saw her and she was worth the wait and the trouble. Here's some before and after pics.

Tried to do the timeline thing but my mobile skills need work. Can't seem to get spaces between pics for comments and they were so witty garage shot is rig on 63's just installed. flopped rig is not mine but a good reminder IFS does not flex like SAS. Rig was IFS when white, tan paint was a cheap solution to a graffiti problem. Me in the mud with winch not working is a reminder to check your rig before showing off and no ATs are not as good as MT no matter what a web wheeler says and not much improvement in MPGs.

Took me a bit to figure that one out. Was admiring the photographer timing to catch it in mid air, then it dawned on me it wasn't a rotated photo but a rotated 4runner
