1990 22re truck vs. 4Runner?

I have a nice, reliable and so forth 1990 22re, 4x4 truck with an X-cab. It has 171K on it and it does well. I do need more room inside to haul stuff for work. The thought of just buying a canopy has occured to me, but I have been contemplating selling it / trading it for a comparable 4Runner. Same engine etc. I like the 4Runners alot.

Eventually one or the other will get an SAS and some 35's etc. for light duty wheeling and my nasty driveway.

What are the weaknesses, thoughts and opinions on the 22re 1990-1995 style runners? I have had alot of Yota's but never one of those.

I would imagine due to weight that the power is down etc. I can get around 20 MPG right now with my truck pretty easily.

Thoughts and opinions on the 4 runner vs. truck, same year and options and engine? I don't want to regret my choice, and what I have works pretty well, but I need to decide.

Thank you for your input.

Its still a 22re in a 2 ton vehicle... Get a manual trans if you do get a 2nd gen 22re. Its slow, yes, but I dont think its unbearable like most people make it out to be. I am running 33x12.5 mud terrain tires with the factory 4.10 gears, and I have no problems getting around, especially after rebuilding the engine. And I get 22-24 mpg hwy at 65mph.
