Hello people,

I am getting the worst gas mileage ever in my 1988 4runner:

250km / 50 L tank.

Step One - Swap out the 02 Sensor (word has it this will not help my situation as I am experiencing a smooth RPM all the time?)

Step Two - Cut out the catalytic converter and replace with a pipe?


(plugs, wires and rotor cap have been recently replaced)

If your 02 sensor is bad it can effect your gas mileage, the computer uses the 02 sensor to keep the air fuel ratio corect, and if the 02 sensor is bad it can effect your gas mileage. Another thing you might also want to check is the TPS, make sure its good and properly adjusted.

 

Thanks for the feedback! I purchased a generic 02 sensor, Bosch. After hearing such negative feedback about using German parts in a Japanese 4runner I am going to return it from the local parts store and purchase one from http://www.densoproducts.com/

After talking to the talent at "the local parts shop" they indicated I may have to approach the issue of poor gas mileage with another approach, having them express that the o2 sensor is not the issue because I am experiencing a smooth rate of RPM's....?

 

Not that this has anything to do with you problem, but have you ever replaced the fuel filter ?, if not then you might consider doing that as well.

 

I replaced my fuel filter in my 86 22re and found it to be tough to get to, and it hasent helped my milage 1 bit.

 

It may not help your mileage at all, but its one one those maintenance items that is most often over looked.

 

I am going to cut out my catalytic converter and see what that does........I also have an new 02 sensor.

Wow that is bad lol. I get around 300km/tank plus or minus. Same size tank, I figured it was because of the lift and tires. I would second checking the fuel filter just to be safe. Those can get gunked up pretty bad. Also check out your air filter.

 

180 miles , well dang........i have a broken gage, when i fill i note present milage and add 300 and post that milage, works so far. Well its not a 4 runner so it gets a bit more milage.

any update on this thread? I have a 1993 4runner and I seem to be getting bad gas mileage 17mpg with a 22re, I have already dropped the cat, bored it out and welded a straight pipe into it. making it a "test pipe". If anyone needs to do this, get 1.5" black steel pipe cut at 11.5" and it will fit perfect. (save you an hour of work or so) should I get a new 02 sensor? my rpms do fluctuate, can you clean an 02 sensor instead of replacing?

 

X17 on the fuel filter... there is an axcess door located in the pass side wheel well that makes it a little easier to get to. Try a seafoam treatment? Change your air filter also. While your at it throw a new pcv valve on there too

 

I did the seafoam thing and dropped a K&N in it. I'll do the pcv valve and fuel filter today, what do you mean by x17? tnx

 

Like x2 on recommending something. But I went big and threw out a 17 cause your fuel filter is prob the culprit. Don't be surprised that when you take it off some nasty brown gas comes out....

 

17mpg is about average for my truck and I think its pretty normal. 22re -5 spd -no cat -30's

 

I'm getting about 20 mpg with my 22RE 5 spd. a camper shell and 235/75/15 AT's, so I would say 17 is definitely a little low.

 

but with the added weight for being a 2nd gen 4runner 17 doesnt seem that bad... i'm stoked when i get 17mpg.

I get any where from 10-20 city and 16-25 hwy-- '95 4runner 22re 5spd 4x4. During the winter, in 4wd around city i get usually 12-14, have gotten down to 10 when I drive fast in 4wd. I usually get about 140-170 miles PER TANK in the winter because I have to let the rig warm-up for 10-15 minutes before I drive it after sitting for 60+ minutes when its -40F. Recently though, I have been getting incredible mileage. Around 90-100 miles per 1/4 tank because I have actually been using 4th and 5th gear and shifting at 3K-3300 rpm instead of revving it out.

 

Ok, so here's and update a few months and several thousand miles later: with no cat, running 31 BFG's on my 93 runner w/ a 22re I'm getting 22 highway and 20 in town. I didn't end up changing the fuel filter, although I still may someday just for maintenance. While driving one day I happened to watch the mile markers and noticed it wasn't making it a whole mile on my odo when the next mile marker came. I zeroed it out right at a mile marker and drove 100 miles, my odo only read 93, so I figured the larger tires to account for a 7% loss, I then GPS'd my speed and noticed that I was going about 7% faster than the speedo said. So now I figure that into my gas mileage. ChaChing!

 

I'm only 14 so I don't know much, but will shifting at such low rpms hurt the engine or tranny? Also, to anyone that knows the answer: If I put one or two turbos in a truck with a 22re, how much do you think that will bring up the mileage?
