Wheel Vibration above 65 MPH!

I always have a wheel vibration above 65 MPH on my 2000 4Runner. I've have had the wheels balanced (multiple times), alignment done and replaces my steering rack (worn out). I can't get rid of the bad vibes. It has the stock wheels and BFG A/T's. I have heard that the stock wheels are hard to get a good balance on them. I local Big O tires has a "Tacoma Cone" for their machine. The balance with the Cone is better but not great. Please help!

I am assuming you've rotated them to see if the shimmy stops or changes. Are your tires cupped, heel/toe where, any abnormal wear patterns. Bent wheel, bent suspension component? Have you had these things checked out?

All looks good! If I knew that I could get a good balance with new wheels I would buy them today!

Remember the old joke?
"Doctor, it vibrates when I drive above 65>"
"Then don't drive above 65..."

Probably balance.
Why would you worry you couldn't get a good balance? Millions of wheels and tires each year get a good balance...
Ask around, find out who is the problem-solving wheel and tire and suspension guru in your area.

When you get the tires balanced, is it the basic balance or the road force balance? If the basic, try to find a shop that will do a road force or sometimes called high speed balancing. It's normally about $12 - 15 per tire vs. the basic balance of a few bucks per tire. Good luck.

It is a very common problem on the Tacoma/4Runner. If you follow the above proceedure you will have the greatest chance of obtaining the smoothest ride possible on your first visit. If not, at least the printouts will tell you exactly what the problems is and if it is a wheel or tire problem.

If you were in the DC area I could hook you up with the right shop and tech that gives a damn how your truck rides. You have to have more then just the tools...
