i vote for the 22re. ive driven a 3vze 5spd, and while it seemed to have more power in the lower ranges, that was it. i took it on the freeyway, and got it to maybe 70, and my buddy flew by me in my truck with a 22re. sucker mustve been doin at least 85. and i couldnt catch up.
...turns out 3 weeks later the HG blew on that guy at the #6 cylinder. ill stick with my 22re. if the 3vze works for you, great! its all about what makes ya happy! oh, and btw, the people that r sayin 22res eat HGs etc, mine has almost 300,000 miles on it and ive never once done a head gasket. ive done the timing chain ONCE when it was at 127,000 miles. and its a little noisy, but timing is dead on, no slack in the chain. its all about takin care of your stuff and not lettin your girlfriend drive it... unless she knows how to drive

I say a 22re is better. Timing chain NEEDS to be replaced. Head gaskets don't. Might as well say 22re's tires wear out, and 3vze's transmission leaks. No comparison. 22re FTW!!!

Both are great engines, but I myself prefer the 22RE. It's smaller, lighter, decent HP/toruqe, gives you better mpg of course, great reputation, easy to work on, timing chain vs belt, for the cost of some extra HP/torque. I'll take the 22RE thanks.

what's better?
I had a 1995 4wd ext cab 5 spd 3.0 V6 (gutless wonder) for 5 years, then I took a 2002 4wd ext cab 5 spd 2.7 4 cylinder on a test drive and I couldn't tell the difference as far as power goes. So I bought the 02, and sold the 95.
The 1995 3.0 really was a gutless wonder and a gas hog, but it was very reliable
I know the 22re's are pretty much bulletproof because I had a 1985 4wd ext cab 5spd 22re and it was still going strong when I sold it.
I hope I'll have the same luck with my 2.7....

Love my 3.0 V6. I was doing 80MPH on the freeway today with no problems. Yes it's gut less and sucks fuel compared to the 3.4. But it does fine. Oh, and it has 395,000 miles on that engine. Did the factory recall on the head gasket at 91k, valve job at 260k, and put another head gasket in at 350k as the Napa guys that did the valve job, screwed it up. I did the head gasket myself and learned a lot.
With the high miles, it's drinking a lot of oil. I figure the rings only last so long. But I change the plugs often and keep it topped off with oil and it runs nice and smooth.
It still passes CA smog with flying colors.
I think it's going to make it to the half a million mile mark. I may need new rings first. I will let you guys know in 3 years.
