Question what transmission is this?

This is the first Toyota I've ever owned, I've always wanted one but have always just stuck with the full size fords. So wanting to build up a prerunner style fiberglass fender yota, I found one decently priced and drove it home. I've noticed a few issues over the past week that I plan to fix but one major issue that's bothering me. First off it's a 1989 yota pickup 4WD, 22RE, 5 speed... I think, 3" body lift, and a few coats of neglect that was left from a few trips through a mud pit (yeah I bought it anyway...)

After talking with a few people I was told the transmission should be a 5 speed, so far I haven't got it passed 4th gear. Not while driving, not while sitting in the driveway, not while turned on or turned off etc etc etc... just won't happened. I've searched and googled and found out the first thing to do was to change out the bushing and seal and 9 times out of 10 will fix the issue. After looking at what the stealership gave me and the transmission that I have, what I have compared to what I'm supposed to have isn't quite meshing. I've searched just about everything I could find and haven't found a single picture of this type of transmission.

I've never seen a manual transmission that shifts from the the side of the case not the top like the transmission that's supposed to be in the truck. So if there is anyone who could help me out I'd definitely appreciate it. Mind you there's a few coats of Neglect on it but I hope it's at least clear enough to know what this could be. Thanks!

Ok thanks. That helps some, I've been able to find a few pictures and some info on the Marlin Crawler website. Are these worth anything? It doesn't keep me from driving and it's not high RPMs on the highway really but the downshift problem does get on my nerves. Is there an easy part to check on these trannies like the bushing and seal of the 5 speeds?

not a jerk at all... that's basically what I'm starting to think with this one. Why it's in there when it's an 89? I don't know. but with the double clutching and slowing down to ridiculous speeds to downshift I think I'm going to try to find a W56.

From the info I've found it should bolt right up to the 22RE and t-case. Need to do some more searching to see if the clutch assembly and linkage will fit right up and work. If so the hardest part will be finding one.

Just a quick word of advise, the 89 w-56 trans is a little different than the 88 and earlier w-56. The shifter for the transfer case is in the trans on an 89, not in the t-case. The earlier ones will fit but you have to cut the floor pan a little. also if you look for a trans get the t-case with it so it matches. Earlier t-cases won't fit the 89 trans and vise versa.By the way that is an early 4-speed you have.

This is definitely confusing, I'm starting to see why I stuck with Fords... the Marlin Crawler website has helped a lot with seeing what the different transmissions are and being able to see images of them

I'm going to assume it originally had the 56 but a previous owner swapped it out. I was looking at the t-case I have and comparing it to the pics I'm seeing on MC and I believe I have an RF1A. Which means if I don't find a transmission that has the t-case with it I need to make sure I find the latter of the two W56s that does NOT have the two shifters on it.
