What is this thing?

I was working on my brakes last night and a friend was helping, he asked what this was for and I had no idea what to tell him.

Something hydraulic hooked up to my rear diff obviously, but what does it do?

Do ya have an FSM or chilton's/haynes? Its the LSPV or load sensing proportioning valve. Adjusts your brakes bias front to rear when it is working right. But lots of time they kinda don't work right. The more weight in the rear, the more it'll bias your brakes to the rear, less, and it's the opposite. Helps prevent lockup with an emrty box.

that bend in the top rod of that don't look right either. Maybe bent up by the last person who did the exhaust? It appears to be bent to the point is fully engaging the rear brakes even without a load in the truck. But can't say for sure due to the angle of the photo.

And yes LSPV.

I think you're right about the rod being bent wrong. However, I tied mine up to the bottom of the bed for better rear braking and the rears don't lock up first, or at all unless on ice.

yeah that still don't look right.

here's mine, which isn't perfect either. BTW but it's closer to what it should be.

P.S. I believe it should be a straight shot from the LSPV on the frame rail to the axle. Front to back. If you follow me. My photo is from left to right and up and down.

yep, looking from the back it should be nearly straight. if you were to look from the top (through the bed), you'd see a curve made in it to help clear the spare tire

thanks corax I guess I was wrong about the bend looking from the top (front to back). Next time i am down 92 Toy's, I am gonna have to look at his 88 LSPV. I had bent mine a while back to help out the braking a little due to the spring sag, now I need it back to where it should be. My rear tires were locking up in the snow.

That might explain why I'm having extra wear on my rear drum shoes.. I just had a lot of brake work done. New bearing and both wheel cylinders, and new shoes. Might be for nothing if I don't figure out what the deal is with the LSPV.

Thanks guys.

Does your exhaust exit on the pass side of the truck? Looks like the bar is bent around it.

Haha, I love when people put dual exhaust on 4 cylinders
xxxtreme, yours doesn't look to bad comparing to mine which I haven't touched.

It's at a bad angle, but you get the gist.

BTW where are your bump stops at? Running without them is an easy way to bend springs.

Edit:never mind I see them now, just camo'd themselves in that pic.

James you scared me there for a second!

I hate my exhaust, its so loud. I wish the guy had just put headers or something on it.
