If he was carbed though it would be a G52 or G54 tranny through 1987.

This is a normal info plate thats normally on the drivers side door panel...
You can see in this picture the very bottom right code says "A340F"

If you have a w56 it will say w56 right there..

Or you can open your hood and see if there is a carb on there.

Doesn't Marlin have a bunch of tranny pics on their site as well? g52 has 4 bolts around shifter if I recall correctly.

Here you go bruddah, you tell us what you have!

Not in 84-88 he doesn't. The info plate is under the hood, attached to the firewall.

Same basical concept though, it will have a section labeled

C/TR
A/TM

C=Exterior Color
TR=Trim Code
A=Axle code
TM=Transmission

Btw this is only true assuming he has EFI, and a STOCK trans.

If his truck is carbbed, he will have the G52 transmission.

Kind of off topic but what's the difference and why did they get different trannys? Is the W stronger? Is fuel injection that much more powerful that it needed it? Or efi w56 is just an overall upgrade nicer model truck so you get better stuff?

Not really sure why Toyota decided to put two (3 actually, counting the turbo) transmissions in the trucks. Woluld have made sense to stick with all being the R-series, or all being the W-series I would think. But perhaps the W series is considered stronger, due to the EFI system producing more power?

I'll just hop in my Delorean, get her up to 88 mph, and go back in time to ask the execs why
