I have a Warn Winch XD9000 winch motor that I would like to test.Can I just connect directly to the battery to see if the shaft will spin? Thanks

 

Yep, should be two terminals on the motor, or at the solenoid pack that run down to the motor.

 

I dont have the selonoid pack.Just the motor and it has 3 terminals.How can I hook up the battery to make the motor spin?

 

Might want to contact Warn tech support to get the wire identification information on those wires:

If you had the solenoid pack connected, you could just identify the wires running to the motor off the center of the solenoids and use those two.

 

Why are there 4 selenoids used on it?Is it actually an AC motor with a 12v DC power supply? I hooked up the battery to all the terminals in every configuration and the shaft won't spin.

 

It is a DC motor. 4 solenoids are needed in order to swap power and ground to the two terminals. If you have two solenoids hooked to 12 volts (call them A and B) and two more hooked to ground (call those C and D), then if you tie one side of the motor to solenoids A and C and connect the other side to solenoids B and D you can now send power to the motor. If you turn on solenoids A and D, you are sending 12 volts to one side of the motor and ground to the other side and it'll turn one direction. Then if you shut off A and D and instead turn on B and C, you are now sending ground to the first side and 12 volts to the other side of the motor and it'll turn the other way.
