twin stick newbie question
#2
Not very if you are mechanically inclined and have all the tools. One question though, why would you want to twin stick the toyota case? Do you have a spool or detroit in the front? A twin sticked toyota t-case does not give you true twin stick capability. You really only gain the option of RWD Low. there is no front wheel drive option available to the public, yet.

Marline Crawler has a transfer case twin shift that I have been looking at.

Moved to offroad tech... Installing a twin stick requires partial disassembly of the transfer case in order to remove the interlock pill that prevents 2wd low. You will not gain anything other than 2wd low, which is what you have if you shift to 4wd low and unlock the hubs.

The twin stick is supposed to help with a front locker and hard turning. What I dont understand is even if there is no power going to the front tires, the front hubs are still locked and therefore both tires will turn at the same speed which is what causes the turning issue in the first place.

Wait so if I put two Toyota t cases together your telling me I won't get much of an effect in 2wd low? My buddy who is a Toyota head put two together and he has pretty low forward gears, idk he has 5:29s also

however as someone stated there is no option as of yet for FWD LO on our transfer cases unless you adapt an atlas tcase. A dana 300 I think has a twin stick conversion for it as well that allows FWD LO.

Also some lockers are engaged by load. If there is no load going to the front driveline the locker is not fully engaged. Otherwise it would be nearly impossible to drive on the road and be able to turn

very true like my detroits will allow for one wheel to move faster than the other on turns but never less than my actual speed, which results in the occasional popping. and my aussie locker in the Cherokee will click.

I know I'll get burned for asking but is the twin stick that you all are referring to the same as a dual t-case? if so am I understanding that the low setting only powers the rear wheels? The reason I ask is that I am looking at the 4.70 t-case regearing option from marlin which as I understand it doubles the crawl ratio without having to modify drivelines etc. and also retaining 4WD.... Flame on (this stuff is confusing)

no friend, dual cases is 2 transfer cases put together and each will have its own shift lever. twin sticks is two shifters for one case and one will control the high-low and one will control 4 and 2 wheel drive. but i can see how it would be confusing because they both have 2 shifters, dual cases could even have 3 shifters.

since this thread seems pretty dormant, I think i will hijack!
I have a Aussie locker in my front axle, and I find my self shifting back and forth between 4lo and 2hi, so I feel that a twin stick would be nice to have so that i can use the low gears while keeping my locker disengaged. (since I lock my hubs while on the trail).
but I noticed that Trail gear has a twin shift kit, but it says not to use with a w56 trans, (which i have) but then it does offer a forward shift option. why would this not work for me? and are there any others kits out there for my w56 trans with forward shift t case?

Edit: I just read that I guess i have a w56 A trans, so I guess i can run this shifter.

ok i am brand new to toyotas (not happy with em right now the motor lastest a week just highway driving) but i know they are excelent wheelers even in almost stock form. I dont have much time to sit here and look around to find all the info on everything so i hope someone with more time or already having the knowledge can fill me in. But i have an 86 yota with a 22r (carb) and 5 spd. Its in the shop gettin a new motor (i dont have the time or facilities to do it) but im looking at minor mods to make it more trailable for a lack of a better work. I got 31'' duratracs and im looking at a short throw shifter and i was wondering what your suggests for a twin tcase shifter is (Rwd lo can come in real handy) and i was also wondering whats a good cheap locker to put in the front and rear i found the lock-rights, spartan, and aussie lockers and im thinkin about a 4.7 gear kit. any input would be aperciated or point me in the right direction. im also a well experianced fabricator so is there plans or blueprints out there to fabricate a twin stick for a forward shift set up? and would a top shift conversion work for me with my bench seat or should i stick with front shift. and who makes a actual front shift twin stick kit? thanks
