Timing off so much it prevents start?

Hi guys, this is probably something simple but i just cant figure it out. I recently took out the radiator and fan and replaced the water pump, I was hoping on replacing the timing guides but no luck yet. So anyway after i put it all back together I just cant get it to start. I aligned the crackshaft pulley to 0degrees and have the timing gear+chain set at the top of the valve cover. After that i removed the distributor and set it on the #1 position and put it back in the engine. So it keeps turning over but just wont start. I have tryed about 6 times now and I'm wondering if the battery is too low? It kinda sounds like the engine might be flooded because I was cleaning the inside of where the air intake tube connects to the throttle body, could the engine just be flooded and now won't start because of low charge in the battery? Please help me because this is driving me crazy and I just want to drive my truck again, thank you guys

Oh by the way its 86 4runner 22re. It makes the sound like it wants to start, but it just wont get going. I cleaned the oil/dirt out of the throttle opening, would that do it? Can the timing be off so bad as to prevent the engine from even starting?

My guess is you forgot to connect the air intake electrical connection-or if you did you may have cross threaded a couple of the connection pins-pull it out and look closely at both sides of the connection-are two pins crushed together perhaps...

I am no mechanic but your symptoms lead me to this...

also utilize the main page of your 2nd gen forum to get better response, a lot of us never make it over here to newbie tech section
