i ended up buying an 89 4wd truck with a bad trans and engine, i found a good trans from an 85 2wd truck for $100 locally. will these swap out or not?

I've never looked closely at a 2wd transmission, but my guess is that without serious modifications, there's no way you're going to be able to get your transfer case bolted to the back of it. In general, any transmission that came with a 22R/RE is going to bolt up to any 22R/RE engine from any year. Might require crossmember and driveshaft modification, but no adapter plate for the engine necessary. But as far as 2wd to 4wd...I'm not sure that's worth the effort.
