transmission installation hang ups

Newbie here... Decided to try to change the clutch in my 1993 pickup...Everything seemed to be going alright until I tried to get my transmission back in the truck. I changed the Pilot bearing, (using the wet paper trick instead of grease), the throw out bearing, clutch and pressure plate. Now I've got the transmission on a jack and partially back in... but something seems to be holding the transmission from going in all the way (about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch).. any suggestions?

did u feel the pilot shaft slide in? thats usually the problem its a real mother sometimes if u have a helper, have one person push an jiggle the tranny towards the motor while the other person turns the flange where your driveline bolts up

Thanks! Will do. It feels like the spline is in but I can't tell if the tip went into the pilot bearing. I'll try adding a little more grease to the tip and give it a good push.

Sometimes it just takes a few attempts until it slides together nicely.

If its that close it should be square to the block, maybe rotate the input shaft a smidgen and try again, and again and again.

Got it! The manual said it should just glide in and not to force it. It was definitely a "mother" to get it to mate all the way... once I was sure it was in good position I had to position myself behind tranny and push with both my feet. Everything is back in and no more slip in my clutch. Awsome!
thanks again guys!

Put wet pieces of paper inside the pilot bearing (inside the cavity of the crankshot) and tap a dowel/rod into the inside of the bearing. I've seen youtube vidoes of it, but that is banned here at work.

I know you already figured it out, but if someone searches and finds this, I had to install the shifters when I got to about 1/2" out, then wiggle the rear output shaft as I pushed it in. Works right away.

Rather than go crazy pushing and shoving things two longer bolts work wonders getting the trans back in.

I just take my time being careful not to cock the transmission.

Most times it really doesn`t take very much pressure to have it pop back in.

Its a matter of getting the splines to line up and the angle of the transmission matched to the angle of the motor. Also, careful with how much grease you use. You do not want that getting on your clutch surface.

Right. If it's not going in it's because the splines aren't lined up, so more grease or more pressure isn't going to help. If everything's lined up, in goes in nice & smooth & easy.

Agreed about the grease, too. You don't want that to spin off all over your clutch...

Great timing for me finding this post! I'm putting in my tranny again today, i would have had it done yesterday, as i had everything all lined up and ready to slide back in, but ran into a small problem...i had forgotten to take out the clutch alignment tool! So hopefully today with that tool out now, i may have better luck, lol
