2 Questions:

If you get an oil change at a Toyota dealer are they going to use the OEM filter( I know this seems like a dumb question but I've seen some int he past put fram or other crap on instead)


Is the OEM filter a good quality filter(does anyone know who makes them)

Next to the Amsoil filter which is one of the best oil filters out there, the Toyota filter is top grade.

Toyota will use a genuine Toyota oil filter when you use them to do your service.

And yes, Fram = crap.
There are a few websites dedicated to this kind of stuff, and the Fram filter opened up is not pretty looking.

I personaly spend the extra dough and use the Amsoil one, as it filters out smaller specs than the Toyota one can.

Thats pretty much what I was looking at, I'm going to start running Amsoil at the next change and was just basically trying to decide whether to use the OEM or go ahead and run the Amsoil filter too. I've seen those sites with the cutaway filters so In the past Ive been running Mobil1 and the pure one filter in my previous cars.

 

I just picked up another case of 10 OEM Toyota tall style oil filters (part#90915-YZZD3) which are original equipment on my 2008 FJ Cruiser, for $45 delivered, from this guy on Ebay.

I also use these (they fit, no problems) on my 1985 pickup 22REC, original on that engine is 90915-YZZD1 which is a little shorter, but still a better filter than anything non-Toyota that is still available.

Denso makes filters for Toyota, they are one of the largest OEM air & oil filter suppliers in the world. Anything Denso makes is usually of great quality, which is why most Japanese auto manufactures have great vehicles because of parts suppliers like Denso, Aisin, Hitachi, etc. TRD is made by Champion Laboratories, whic also make filters for K&N, Mobil 1, STP and Royal Purple. These are all good choices. Desno OEM filters for Toyota are also good but Amsoil filters are much better which is why they cost 3 times as much. The best way to prevent dirt in the engine is to have a good air filter. It you're really concern about a clean engine then use an OEM style filter and not a performance one. OEM filters are more restrictive, this is great for capturing more incoming dirt particles. Use a good synthetic engine oil to help engine cleanliness along with a good oil filter.

Thanks for the recommendation my friend, rebuilt the 22REC at 300K miles after a steady diet of regular oil changes with Valvoline and Toyota filters.

I think I'll stick with what I'm doing

 

Yup Toyota ftw i use Toyota Oil filters on every Toyota i own.

86 Toyota 4runner 22re SR5(265k miles):Toyota oil filters/Valvoline High mileage 10w40.

04 Toyota Tacoma 3VZE SR5(66K miles):Toyota oil filters/Valvoline Full Synthetic 5w30.

81 Toyota Pick-up 22r SR5(283k Miles):Toyota oil filters/Vavoline Full Synthetic 10w30.

 

I always try to use the OEM Toyota filters. My high school shop teacher had us all bring in our used oil filters and cut them open, and the factory-issue filters usually had the best elements. Try it yourself - nothing like having a good excuse for chopping things up with the Sawzall.

Along with the Amsoil filter look at the 10w40 oil made for the flat tappet cams.Holds Viscosity better than any other oil I've ever run in my 4runner.
