I have a 1999 Toyota 4 Runner SR-5 and I was told there was a recall on these trucks a few years back for a Head Gasket issue. My questions to everyone are (1) is this true? (2) do you know how I go about finding out if this recall includes my truck and (3) do I have to contact Toyota directly or just the dealer I bought the truck from? Thanks to anyone who replies!!!

 

There is no head gasket recall on your 99 whether it has the 3.4 V6 or the 2.7 I4. There were some very limited head gasket issues with a few early 96 and 97 models, after that they are fine. The HG issue people think of applies to the 2nd gen 3.0 3vz V6 motors.

I too have heard of the head gasket recall and advised that Toyota still honors it for 1995 3.0 motors. Is this year still included in the recall? Are there select engines within the 95 year, or is it safe to say all qualified? I am looking at buying a vehicle that has supposedly not had this service yet.

Is it as easy as taking the vehicle to any Toyota dealeship and they will take care of it for me? Any advice on the best way to approach this?

I have a 96 3rd gen, I can verify it was recalled.

They replaced head gaskets, and 13 years, 130k later no issues from it...
