Tire question

I recently purchased a 1995 4runner with the 3.slow and only 132k miles. I love this thing to death, but I need a little more power on the free way. Currently it has 31 10.5 15 tires on it, which isn't terribly big, but they are 10 ply tires. Now if I went down to maybe a 6 ply, do you guys think it would make a noticeable difference? The only reason I'm complaining is it takes all day to hit 65mph, and thats with the overdrive off and the ect on. If the wind is blowing at me then I can't hardly get to 60mph. Any help would be awesome

do you know if it came stock with that size tire your gearing could be off. it has nothing really to do with the ply rating of the tire.

No I dont believe that it's the stock tire size, because I'm pretty sure I'm going faster than what the speedo says. Well isn't a 10 ply tire going to weigh quite a bit more than a 6 ply? People have told me that they have had their 3.slow up around 100mph, while I doubt mine would even hit 80, and if it did it would take most of a day to get there and I'd have to be going down hill with the wind at my back haha.

Look at the codes on your door jamb data plate, or do a spin test, to figure out what your diff ratio is.

It depends on the tire. Could be as much as 10 lbs more. www.tirerack.com has specs including weight on most tires. A 10 lb lighter tire will make a difference in acceleration. But would it be enough to make you happy? I'd guess probably not.

Sounds like you need a tune up! And do a compression test.

I was thinking about getting a tune up, but I dont know if I should get my valves adjusted too... Idk what to do because some people say that it's normal for the 3vze to only reach the speeds I'm getting, because it's so underpowered. While I have a few saying they can hit a hundred miles per hour.

im using basically 32's now and i cant keep at a steady 65 going up a hill, i need to regear to 4.56 or 4.88 because i think i have 4.30 and mine came stock with 265/70/16 tires

im not saying its going to gain you alot of power back but if you just bought its a good idea todo a tune up. air/ fuel filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, cand and rotor and change the fluids. like said before check yoir door jam and see what gears you have.

In addition to the door jamb I believe one of the visible trim items on the truck of coming with factory 31s would be the silver and black fenderwell trim, provided it's completely stock. I didn't notice whether or not you've got an auto or a manual, that for sure will have an impact on your acceleration. The 3.0 likes a manual behind it...
