Tips: 22re oil change

I haven't figured out a way to get the oil filter off without getting oil all over everything. Right now I'm just living with it. I was thinking about parking on a curb to jack the passenger side up, but also put the drain plug on the passenger side, so it might not drain too well. Any other ideas?

Yea take off the skirt.

On a serious note, there is nothing you can do with the drain plug...it is where it is. The oil filter can be relocated with an oil filter relocater kit.

Thanks on the relocator. I'll probably stick with the skirt till the end of summer, tho.

I was just kidding you. I know I hate how the oil filter just drains all over the front diff. Poor design in my book

I am not sure what the problem is. I have changed my oil going on 100 times, and never much of a mess. Stick a rag under the filter before you loosen and take it of buy hand.

i thought you meant the rubber splash curtain.

actually i find the easiest way to keep it clean when pulling the filter is to pull the tire first. give me a little more room to climb in there, and i get an eyeball on the front pad thickness.

but yeah, like teuf said, a big rag under the filter right as you're about to pull it off should catch what comes out of the filter flange. tip the filter straight up as soon as it comes off the threads. that's really it man.

or if it's that much pouring out, you can try cutting the bottom of an antifreeze jug off and try to press it under there to catch spill, rather than the rag.

i say get more rags.

i know this is old...

old bug wooden handle phillips and a hammer is all you need. punch a hole in the lower end of the filter, and catch the oil in a cut off bottle.

Same way I do it, I make sure I wipe off as much as I can off the differential and then don't park it on a concrete driveway for a while.
