Timing problem

So I tried timing my 85 22re 4runner and I jumped the wires like Im supposed to do, but it doesnt make any difference in the timing, when I take the jumper wire out. It automatically adjusts itself while Im trying to time it. Its running I think kinda rough and its hard to start when its cold. So right now its at around maybe 12 BTDC or so and it wont go down anymore then that without dying. Can vacuum lines do this? I just bought the runner and through this engine in it.

Also I drove it for about 10 mins after I installed the engine and I got a flashing check engine light at an idle but went away when I reved up the engine.

Is this the jager that just joined COTTORA? If so, I would post up on there and get some input from thefatkid.

Timing should be 5* BTDC, and may not change with the jumper in - the jumper just ensures that you're at base timing.

Flashing CEL is BAD - it's not just some emissions BS. Install the jumper and count the flashes of the CEL to see what the code is.

I had the same problem and it was my Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). If it is not set right it does not know the engine is at idle and you will not be able to set your base timing. To set the TPS you have to get a ohm meter and feeler gauge and follow the steps in the repair manual. It is not very hard but it helps to take the throttle body off the intake manifold. If you do a google search you can find the steps for the adjustment.

Thanks guys for the help. I did figure out what the code was and it ended up being the ac switch was on but the ac doesnt work. So on to the next thing. Im going to look at my tp and see if its in need of adjustment. I was driving it to work this morning and it was just running like a dog, no power. So Im wondering if I might have a plugged cat. I had a dakota years ago that did the same thing and it ended up being the cat. Also do these oil sending units go bad? My oil presure is fluctuating alot between idle and cruising rpms. The motor is supposed to only have a 116,000 on it (not sure if its true though), this shouldnt be enough to take the oil pump out should it?

Last night I adjusted my valves and also found out I forgot the two bolts that bolt , I cant remeber what it was, to the back of the plenum. That must of been a huge vacuum leak! Runs better now though. Tonight Im replacing my O2 sensor because I got a O2 code, and I got code 11 again, so now Im thinking I need to adjust my TPS. The ac didnt do it like I thought.

Fixed it, TPS needed cleaning! That was it. It wasnt closing all the way. Now if I could just find a O2 sensor.....

Good job! Now after you set you base timing with the terminals jumped, when you remove the jumper the timing should be around 12-14, did it do that?
