Red face Timing Belt Change??

Here is something I am pondering

How does one know when to change a timing belt??

Vehicle mileage 225,000 or so and engine mileage pretty much unknown could be any where from 1000 to 200,000 miles.

Would you just change it all or would you look at the overall condition ??

Husband ran off with his boyfriend after giving the wife the divorce papers.

Got the engine still on the engine stand just to help clean out the junk saved it from scrap .

Are u sure it has a belt? If so change it. It would be so easy sitting on an engine stand. As far as knowing when to change it, follow the manufacturer recommendations for the correct interval.

Well How do i follow the recommended interval with unknown mileage???

That was pretty much the point.

Yes I am pretty sure it has a timing belt but I don`t get out much I don`t think anyone has made a gear drive set up for a 3.4 yet but I could be wrong.

Changing the belt resets the interval to a known starting point. I'd throw on a new timing belt kit if the timing belt, painted lines on the belt, water pump, bearings, etc. don't look pristine.

Painted lines??

See my issue is the soon to be ex wife knows the engine was removed to be rebuilt no clue as to if it is done or just needing to be pulled apart and rebuilt.

All I can say is for a person to run off and sign off on every thing his boy friend must be really hot!

Painted lines...yeah, the ones that are on some belts to aid where the cams and crank line up when installing the belt.

Maybe pull the valve covers and see if that tells you something i.e. nice and shiny as in rebuilt?

Why not just ask her for loverboy's phone number and give him a call, if possible?

Well Wyo, when your done being jealous of the hubby and his beau, just replace the belt, seals, and pump. If its on the stand, you can inspect it easy. If the belt is shinny on the smooth side, and doesn't look/feel like new rubber, chances are it hasn't been done yet.

If I were in your shoes, I would replace everything regardless. That way I KNOW it's been done, and done right. And record the mileage once you find a suitable vehicle to put it in, therefore your replacement interval starts over. I believe the replacement mileage is 90K miles on a 3.4. But I would do mine at 60-75K miles, just to be safe.

....and as far as the lower end, it may or may not need rebuilding.

I always just replace the timing belt on any used car, or engine i get. Unless the p.o. has documentation otherwise.
