I have a 97 4runner and have been hearing a lot about these throttle body spacers and how they can increase hp and mileage... has any body here had any experience with them?

 

IDk, who told you they will do anything good to your truck.

But TB spacers dont do anything for modern EFI (fuel injection) engines.

thanks guys... I had heard both it worked great, and that it was the most expensive paper weight they had bought. Just thought I'd ask though.

 

search around and you will find a few mods that help with "breathing" and possibly added hp. A lot of people have done the deck plate mod amoung a few others. Good luck and WELCOME!

 

The 3.4 engine is a direct port injected motor meaning fuel and air won't meet til they're both in the cylinder rendering a TBS useless no matter what you may here.

 

I had one for a while. Made a great cup holder.

Actually, in all seriousness, when I did actually have one on my engine, the only thing it did was whistle like a turbo spooling up when I punched it. That was it. No HP gains, no mileage gains. Just an annoying sound.

 

If you want quick HP gains, the best way to go with an EFI engine like modern Toyota's is to replace the entire intake with a K&N. Throttle body spacers should only make any difference at all on an engine with a carburetor. They will add a "whistle" to your truck when you punch it, but then again, replacing the entire intake will give it a much better sound with real power gains.

Or you could just do the deckplate mod that everybody talks about and stick a high flow air filter in there and be done with it. Won't give you the same power gains as replacing the entire intake but it will be much cheaper.

Kill your K & N.

Deckplate, ISR removal, and a good filter are all you need to be happy.

That and TRD stickers.

 

There is nothing wrong with K&N, it must be the user if it fails. I and many others have had nothing but success with K&N for many years.
There are just some unlucky few who do something to the filter and it becomes a pain for them.

 

TRD stickers and badges are good for at least 2-5 horsepower...

 

I could have swore as soon as I added a couple stickers to my truck the throttle response increased dramatically.

Oh and whats wrong with K&N? I've used them and Airaid intakes on a few of my trucks with no problems. Have people had bad experiences? I have to admit I've never really been a part of any "offroad communities", mostly just tinkered on my trucks here and there so if those intakes had a bad stigma I never would have heard of it.

As far as the OP goes though, my personal opinion sways towards the deckplate mod. "Cold Air" intakes are expensive for what you get. Deckplate it, throw in a high flow filter, and run it! Thats what I plan for my 4Runner anyway.

 

Oil + afm = not what I wanna deal with, If your going to go "high flow" go with a true flow..

 

K&N and the like are mostly hype. Do enough research on the topic, and you'll find that the paper filters are actually MORE effective in virtually every situation. I ran a TRD filter (K&N) for a few years. I saw no increase in HP or mileage. I cleaned and oiled it per manufacturers instructions. Not saying it was bad... just not worth it to me. Plus, with as dusty as it is around here, I had to clean and oil it often. Got old, fast.

I'm back to paper filters, and I'm happy.

They're slightly different on different engines, so not knowing what you're working with makes it difficult to accurately answer your question.

Try searching with this term "ISR" or perhaps "Intake Silencer Removal Mod"
I know there are several write ups on how to do this...
