T-CASE shifting problems?

when i put my 80' yota into 4hi or 4lo...it goes into both of them FINE...perfectly...but when i try to take it out of 4hi...sometimes its VERY VERY hard to do it...just wondering if this is normal or what....and i grabbed ahold of my front drive shaft yesterday...and i can shake it alll around...i was thinking maybe bad joints...at both ends...cuz at the end that it connects to the t-case...it shakes pretty bad...then at the other end where it connects into the diff....it shakes pretty bad...now i have had some bad vibrations in 4hi going about 15mph....im almost POSITIVE this is it...so what are those 2 joints called...i know the diff end is a u-joint...but whats the other ...(extremely newbie questions i know)

Pretty normal sometimes if you are not on a flat surface with no "tension" on the driveline. You might need a new shifter seat.

One is a single u-joint the other is a double u-joint. Easy enough to replace.

Ken,
IIRC all of those u-joints use the same "spider bearing (as the dealership calls them I think)"

Good luck.

mine is hard to put back in 4 hi so i just let it roll backwards in neutral and then it shifts just fine.

Every single toyota Ive ever been in with the gear drive transfer case, is hard to put back into 2wheel. Ive seen beat up ones that did it, and show quality ones also. You just have rock it back and forth. Hell, almost all 4x4s with manual transfer cases take some finesse. As far as your vibration. My driveline has a lil play, but excess will cause it to wobble. Sounds like you need new u joints. Good luck!
