i want to run a dual stick setup from marlin crawler(they are out of stock right now
) it got me thinking about all the people saying they have 15 or 20 speed transmissions when they run the dual case. my question is can i run the low 4 in any gear or can i only run it in first?

you have any gearing you want.
you have the 5 forward gears and 1 reverse in 2hi. you have 5 forward gears and 1 reverse running in 4-lo, 5 forward and 1 reverse in double low, and 5 forward and 1 reverse in trip low (if you do dual ultimate crawler setup)
So that 20 forward gears, 4 reverse gears.. Its all about the gearing..

so by referring to a dual stick set up it sounds to me that you are referring to a twinstick which will allow you to have 2WD high and low range and 4WD high/low range.
advantage is that if you have a locker up front you can disengage 4WD when you bind an axle and prevent breakage:

a twin stick set up will not give you any more gear selection with out adding a TC
Dual transfer cases will net you 20 forward and 4 reverse (mine is twinsticks with 4.7 gears in the rear case and stock 2.28 in the front case) 220:1 double low range:

and some folks go dual transmissions:
