straight pipe ?
on my old 1990 silverado 5.7l v8 i straight piped it we just cut the old rusted muffler off left the caty on of course and it helps with power and mpg (its not obnoxiously loud either )
the muffler was rusted and didnt seem worth it to replace
now my dads 87 4 runner the muffler on that is close to death so i was thinking why not just straight pipe it. just put a pipe to point the exhaust down were it used to enter the muffler would this hurt the litle 22re or would it
matter ?

think thats what i will do though just go get him a new perfomance one . dont want that little 22re to sound like a hornets nest but how could it hurt the engine wouldnt it just release some back pressure alowing the engine to breathe more effectivly

like xtreme said, some might argue that fact. I for one, like straight pipes, they make sense to me. however...straight pipes on a v8 and an i-4 both sound very very different. I pulled the cat off my 87 4runner the other day and rodded it out, while it was off, just for the heck of it, i ran the truck to hear it...sounds....well....bad. I will be putting a performance muffler on there soon, but it wont be a loud one. just enough to make a little sound.

back pressure is a big thing. keeps the flow of fuel/air mix into and out of the cyclinder proper for best performance. matters more in the world of 2strokes but still has a major effect on performance. alot of people think louder=more power. sounds like it but not so much. "back pressure" is a sound wave the flows back through the pipe into the motor and should be tuned so that the wave hits as valve overlap is ending(short period of time when the intake and exhaust valve are open at the same time).less back pressure=leaner mix. best bet is to get a flowmaster like twisted said. they arent expensive just make sure you get a good name, they tend not to rust as fast. that muffler rattle drives me nuts

this all is in lower rpm. high rpm less is better but im assuming that you arent talkin about nascar here lol

2 of my friends had 22r's with straight pipes. One of em had it cut right behind the cat and it sounded like a tractor. the other had a Y pipe behind the cat with tips out the back and it sounded like a bumble bee. i had a straight Y pipe and hi flow cat on my 3vze with 3.5" tips out the back and it pretty much did nothin but popped when you hit the gas and was ungodly loud which is the sound i want on my trucks. lol

oh and a cheaper version of the flowmaster 10 series is a cherry bomb extreme. its pretty much the same exact muffler. i had one on my truck to and it was very deep. i belive dontsteponmysteeze has one on his 22re and loves it

I run a 3' delta 10 single chamber with tri-y header and hi flow cat on my 22re its sounds mean. i heard back pressure was created in the primary tubes by the vp of sales at flowmaster aka my buddys dad. they even make duel exhaust pre bent for our toyotas.

I had a 1987 Toyota pickup with a 22r in it...
A hanger broke loose and caused an exhaust leak the size of a quarter.
Didn't have the money to pay and get it fixed at the muffler shop,
Didn't have the welder to do it myself...
So i cut the muffler off right under the cab of the truck and ran it like that for 2 weeks.
Sounded like crap and backfired a lot. The way i see it i didn't have a choice.
When i got some money together i ran the pipe out the back and put a 3 1/2 tip on it...
Sounded like Fast and the Furious....
If your young dumb and bullet proof as my dad would say, then go ahead and straight pipe it...It wont KILL your performance, you may notice just a little bit of power loss...
I didn't...I actually got better gas mileage...
But once you get older (as did i) you will grow out of this "gotta be loud so everyone notices me" stage, and you'll put a muffler on it.
Now...If you've got a Chevrolet with a 327 5.3 with true duals....Thats a different story

Its not backpressure. he could run open header and it would be max performance.
its exhaust velocity.. 4 strokes dont need back pressure. However, this doesnt mean to runa 4 inch pipe. Without some exhuast velocity the exhaust gases will stay in the pipe. Exhaust back pressure has nothin to do with it.
your best choice for exhaust is 2.25 inch exhaust tube. ENough flow for more performance, but not big enough to hinder performance.

Those cherrybomb extremes are like straight pipes there's one v shaped piece of metal in it
