Angry starter problem, please help!

i have a 91 toyota pick up 2wd automatic with the 22re motor, it would always fire right up but now it just quit, i have a brand new battery that was tried on other vehicles so i don't need it load tested, and i just got the starter checked and got some things replaced in it and it was directly tested and it works good, when i turn the key on all lights light up and everything is normal, but when i turn it to crank....nothing, nothing at all, not even a click, just silent and the lights dim a little. idk if it's a wire i'm not seeing is broke or something or if this is a common toyota problem, or if anyone else ever had this problem. please give me your input as soon as you can. thanks

If you don't hear a *click* then it is probably the starter relay. I believe it's on the passenger side fender well. Yes this is a common problem.

Hit the starter with a hammer then try it again.

And keep in mind that the starter relay is bolted in, so you have to take out the entire fuse box to remove it. If you try to pull it straight out, it will break and not come out.

I had this problem in my wifes 4runner and it ended up that the negative terminal on the battery was cracked on the underside so I couldn't see it without removing it and inspecting it.

*laugh* Which is why I keep a hammer under the front seat.

Remove the starter, and take it apart at the back of it. Inside there will be a brass plunger and 2 cooper contacts. Replace the contacts and smooth out the plunger. Reassemble and start it. Should take care of it. Pretty common with Toyota's.

check all of the contacts. sometimes it's a bad hot lead to the starter. i know you said you just had it fixed, but just double check it.

Red face

This is a automatic have you checked the neutral safety switch to be sure it is not stuck in the open position ??

These vehicles are known for poor ground cables from new . For peace of mind I always upgrade them when ever I get a new Toyota through my shop.
