Yep. I bet I'm the only one to try that, too.

i found some at farrs true value for like a buck a piece.. the only ones i could find that would fit properly were .047 though. i just add one of them on top of some of those wide shoulder shims that come with the install kits(it enables me to get my separator under the bearing. what i need is one of those fancy pullers like you have, then i wouldn't have to worry about it..

Now that is too deep. What calipers are you using? Having that much variation from .065 to .073 shouldn't be happening.

Mitutoyo digital that i got off a Boeing QA Inspector. I believe they're accurate but I will check against a feeler gauge set i have. I have another set of harbor freight calipers that also measured similar shim value. I might be able to borrow a micrometer from my stepdad.

Edit: I pulled the inner pinion bearing and found a .021 shim that had separated from the shim pack and was clinging to the bearing. Your absolutely right ScottyC the above pictures were with a total shim value of .094.

Here are the actual pics with the .073 factory shim and .008 Backlash

Just a hair deep, but you are getting close now.

Try .069 and I bet your all set.

.069 shim pack, .014 Backlash. I had a hell of a time setting the backlash for some reason and finally got a reading that was close to .010 and went with it. When I re-checked the BL it was at .014. My question is can I tighten the BL up and paint another pattern or will the paint that is already on the pinion gear effect the new pattern?

You are soooooo close. But, that is shallow.

Try .071

I know this is time consuming, but worth it for the perfect setup.

I know. Something just doesn't seem right. All the patterns are true, so it makes me wonder if something is up with the calipers.

I definitely like the coast pattern of .073 the best of all of them. Maybe play with the backlash to try to center the pattern.

I still think its a hair shallow. Run the .073 shim again. Just play with the backlash to center the pattern and call it good.

Wow, this is just one of many I've recently read, regarding shims, etc, and it's really an awakening as to just how little I know about how parts of my rig are detail-driven. Ignore the details? IMPLOSION Is likely to ensue, fairly quickly. Good to see scottyc hooking up a customer! LOVE your work, Scotty, ....all I've seen so far!

Not trying to revive the thread, just dealinf with a vibration after installing a 2"lift OMEmu leaf pack... Soooo, was told to look to some things, including pinion shims..... this thread came up on top in google! Hahaa....

Sub'd for reference and on goes my search o.O. .....hehe
