Source for pinion shims

Does anyone know a good inexpensive source for pinion shims, I'm kinda frugal and I cant see going to the dealer and buying a shim just to find out I need a different one. I'm regearing an E-locker and the V6 master install kit I got didn't have any.

Update: adjusted backlash

So I adjusted the backlash to around .008 and the drive pattern looks alot better to me, I was hoping to get some input from folks in the know.

The coast side seems really close to the toe end of the tooth.

Could the mods maybe move this thread to the proper forum? I'm not sure really where it would need to go. I drive an '85 toyo pickup but the e-locker is from a '97 fo'runner

Looks good to me. And Randys Ring n Pinion is a good place to get shims, sept u gotta order em... Kinda goes with doing gears, you wont find anything local unless you 'know' someone who's got extra stuff from kits like i do =P

But seriously the master install kit didnt come with ANY? Who the hell you'd buy that from? That's rediculous

oh and make sure you load the gear when you're turning it for the correct tooth pattern. In other words you need to simulate like you're driving the wheels by adding drag to the ring gear (resistance) while turning the pinion. FYI

Thanks for the input, I didn't even think about Randy's. I'm in Shoreline so its only about a 20 min drive up to Paine Field.

I got the Yukon gears and install kit from ScottyC on here and have been really happy so far, he's a great guy. They came in a plain white boxes which I dont understand but the quality seems good.

I used ZUK's rag on the pinion flange and wrench on the ring gear bolt method to get the pattern

rag and wrench works good

The coast side you have shows it right in the middle...in a good spot. The drive side is really hard on the toe and could mean that the pinion is too deep but this is not your case. Your depth is good based on the coast side. Richmond ring/pinions have that same drive side look and there's nothing you can do about it. Is it a Richmond? What are the stampings on the ring?

ps--a wider backlash will move the drive a little closer to center....Richmond wants to see .010" minimum BL.

The stamping reads "F8 K(circled) T8 - 488 V6 8X39"

Here are some pics of the ring gear box and master install kit box, hopefully we can figure out what gears I bought

Ya....I've seen those circle K gears before. I have numerous pics of them in some of my links but I can't find them right now. There isn't much you can do to make the drive side more to the center. Try .010" backlash but no wider. It might pull it off the toe some. It's the way they cut the gears at the factory.

I believe our famous gear installer ZUK, gets his pinions shims at an Ace Hardware store. Do you not Ken?

use the yellow marking compound in the kit as its easier to see. What pinion shim are you using?

The gears are Trail-Gear gears.

Which pretty much means that they are Yukon Gears in a plain white box. Install kit is the same as well. Koyo pinion bearings and Timken carrier bearings. And, yes, it came with pinion shims and you should have plenty to get what you want. They should have been under the SK32 sticker in the install kit box.

You will notice the part number is the same as Yukon's minus the YG preceding the T8-4.88V6. The "K" stands for Korea (which is where Yukon gears are cut).

Yukon cuts a lot of gears for different companies. Nitro Gears being one of them.

9 out of 10 times, I start with a .065 pinion shim and its $$$ on the setup. I set the backlash to .007 and it gives a good centered pattern. Just make sure you get each of the adjusters to 150ft/lbs within the backlash range and you should be good to go.

The yellow marking compound is a lot easier to read a pattern IMO. Add a little gear oil to it to thin it, and it should show a nice readable pattern.

I do agree with ZUK that the coast pattern is $$$, so play with the backlash a little. I would still like to see a couple pics with the yellow compound though to make sure its good as the drive side is harder to read with the blue in the pics.

.065 on the pinion shim hmmmm, i always end up at around 80 or .090. though i have never setup any TG's.

all the factory shims that Ive seen are between .080 and .100.

op, when your setting your BL and CBPL, make sure you "seat the bearings"..
and tighten the carrier side adjuster last, helps against ring gear deflection.

and x2 on using the yellow R&P paint.

Factory shims are usually between .070-.080 from my experience. Most fall between .073-.078.

The TG gears don't require that much shim though, and almost everyone I have set up (100+) are right around .065 pinion shim.

yea i figured it was a TG thing. and i should state that most of those factory shim sizes that ive seen came out of 4cyl 3rds.

im setting up some G2's right now and im not impressed(packaging, mix matched coast/drive). do you know who cuts the G2's?

No, I don't. But, I play it safe with Genuine Gears by staying far away from them.

I have seen more of them come into my shop blown up than any other gear set.

yea i don't recommend them either but sometimes the customer insists lol..

though allot of the durability comes from a proper setup. with out that, any brand of gear is junk.

Go back to the .073 shim and get a pattern with the yellow. .065 is too shallow.
