One write up for conversion to IFS

Additional stuff involved if you want a straight axle

Personally I'd ditch the 2wd and purchase a 4wd, or as you suggested, just lock the rear if that will do what you want the truck to do.

Unless your rig is HIGHLY modified or has extreme "sentimental" value, you're better off to sell the 2WD and buy a 4WD.

Is yours actually a Prerunner, or a 5 lug "mini"?

You have a very nice truck for a daily driver keep it.
Go buy a older 4wd Toyota for $1000 - $2000 and build it, this way when you drag it down a rock or roll it over you will not care and might even find it fun.
Wheeling sucks when you are worried about your paint.
