shifter removal

yes i did search

i got the tranfer case snap ring off

my 5 spd shifter there is a metal ring that seems to push down really stiff... but i can get the lever out.. some post talked about turning it left?? do i have to remove the 4 bolts?? there is one on the top to... i didnt have to remove them for the tcase,,,

yeah the fsm said to remove bolts and the internet said to turn it leftwise?

thanks im going outside to do it now..

just un stuck my drive shaft bolts!

you dont have to remove the plate. Just press down, and turn it about 45 degrees, and it will pop up and out. Some times it can be a PITA and you may need a flat tip screw driver. Most of the time, i can remove them just with my fingers.

ok i seriously need help.. i cant push the shifter rod down at all... also i can get the top to screws to take them out.. do i need to remove the shifter to clear when i remove the tranny if not ill leave it in... the truck is up on jack stands

you have to take out the shifter for the tranny cause it has to slide back. its not hard to do just a pain in the ass getting to some of the bolts I got frustrated and took a grinder and cut groves to get to the bolts

You can go either way, push down on the center cup and turn to release it from the side pins:



Or remove the whole base plate. Just watch for the little steel spacers in the rubber gasket (if present). They usually stay put, but if you bend the gasket too much, they can pop out:

Help!!!

Sorry guys, I have searched all over the site, and haven't had luck finding an answer. Can anyone tell me how to figure out what trans can be in an 86' truck? Also to give some more info, was informed by the previous owner, that anytime the truck made a noise of any type, he replaced the trans. I believe he told me it is on the #5 trans. Is there an identifying # somewhere on the case, so I know if I have a W56, R150, 151, G52, whatever? Any advice would be great, as I know everything else about my truck except this.

sambeano what does it say on the door pannel?? thats crazy to be ont the 5th transmission!!!!!

ok thanks 4crawler so i am not pushing down the shifter rod and twisting im pushing the retaining ring and it should pop up

Will have to go look, but am sure whatever the door panel says won't be what it is. Was told it was an R150, but another Toyota nut here local to where I am told me an R150 or 151 won't bolt up to a 22R, only the V6. So now am at a loss as to what I have. And yes, the guy I bought it from was kind of an oddball. He was convinced that if the truck made a weird clunk or pop or bang, no matter where the noise came from, that the trans was going out. I know it is at least a later (83 or up) trans, because it doesn't have the old style side shift or the old style big top cover. It is the newer small shifter with 6 bolts holding it on. But if I understand my Toyota literature correctly, that still leaves me with 4 choices?!?!?

Went and looked on the door panel, and all I have there is the VIN tag that lists the manufacture date, the air pressure of stock tires, the load carrying capacity, and the VIN. As an interesting side note, did have a friend at a Toyota dealership (and he's old school Toyota, so he's good) do some research on my truck, and according to the VIN, this truck was never intended to leave Japan. Could explain why some of the badging is so strange on it. I say this because when compared to buddy's trucks, their VIN tags and hood badges are written with some English on them, and none of mine are. Everything, including the original owners manual are all in Japanese.

If it is other than a W56A or W56B transmission, then you push down on the little cup at the base of the shifter and turn it. This disengages the pins in the side of the shifter base from the slots in the cup:

If it is a W56A or B, there is a small plate screwed to the top of the shifter base than holds the shifter in place. For that type, either unscrew the small plate or remove the 6 bolts holding the main base to the transmission.

Hey guys, sorry I didn't get back on soon enough to post anymore questions. Been dealing with wife having to have emergency surgery, and the news that my dad is probablygonna pass in a month or two, so it has been a busy couple of weeks, and my computer time kinda slid to the back burner. But back to my original question. We have had several people try to identify the trans in my truck, the general consensus being that it is an R150 or 151, but no one can tell for sure. Is there a # or something I can use to easily identify it? As in my last post, there is no door tag, as if it would matter, since this is at least the fourth or fifth trans in the truck. I know (I think, forgive me if wrong) the R151 only came behind V6 or turbo models. Have been told it wouldn't bolt up to my 22r, but that doesn't make sense, as the turbo model is based on a 22r, so has the same bellhousing pattern. So if someone can tell me what to look for, I would be greatly indebted.

Ok, used 4crawler's link to Marlin Crawler's website, and i think I have determined it is a W56. Cn't tell if it the A or B series though. Does this trans hold up to off road abuse fairly well?

1993-1995 EFI MC11816 W56-E 5sp 4cyl 22R-E


going to drop the tranny today or tomorrow depending on rain.. there is 4 bolts and i cant get to the top two until i lower the tranny a bit... im having issues pushing and turning its really stiff
