Safe to disable PS gearbox?

1981 with stock power steering. Will it hurt anything if I fill and bleed the steerbox, and rout its input and output straight into each other? Reason I ask is that I have to install the steerbox right now, and be able to drive without damaging it, but I can't install the pump yet.

It should not hurt the steering gear box.

you do know how hard that will turn when stopped and at low speeds.

you should be fine, I ran my 86' 4runner for 2 years without the power steering pump installed.

Just finished installing the steerbox, reservoir, and lines straight in and out of the res. Works fine, seems a bit heavier and quicker than the old box. I should've clarified - I'm installing stock power steering into a truck that never had it, so I'm used to Armstrong steering; PS parts are off another 81.
