reviving an 82

so i was given a very beat up 1982 4x4 single cab. it has been a farm truck for quite but iv decided since the gas prices im gonna put it back on the road. everything is stock and its pretty rusty. it takes a minute to start it and it smokes a little. what are some things i should do to check on all the driveling components and to make sure i dont get stranded out in the forrest. i want it to be semi capable of trail riding, not anything to rough. its a 4 speed 22r with stock everything really as if you didnt already no. just any info would be nice. thanks benny v

Anything and everything is suspect. Check all the usual stuff. Tranny or diffs making noise? U-joints good? Timing chain about to go? Clutch?

Make sure all the vacuum hoses are connected and spray some carb cleaner in the carb. Change all the fluids in the engine and gear boxes. Make sure the frame isn't about to break in half.
