Replace head w/o Timing cover removal
I just completed the timing chain job complete with new cover and gaskets all around. (pan, head and intake/exhaust etc.) While I had each part off I cleaned the parts as good as I could. In that process I believe I ruined the valve seals with purple cleaner and brake cleaner. I should have known, and I should have replaced them. Well the truck runs well but of course it smokes, when warm it smokes a lot!
So I do plan on attempting to make this truck a reliable member of my fleet and want to do what’s right, but of course I want to save some coin in the process. The best way to save coin is to do the job the right way the first time. (I’ll learn someday)
So here is question one: I’ll need to do some head work in order to fix this smoking problem and I feel inclined to get a new head from “Toyota Parts” in Colorado Springs. $375.00 should get it to my door and all I need to do is bolt on my rocker arm assembly and I’m top end fresh. Question: does a 200,000 mile bottom end hold up well enough to go another 100,000 with the new top end?
The next question is: can I pull the head without pulling the timing cover? If I don’t pull the cover I have no way of keeping the chain tensioner from extending itself and pulling my chain such that I won’t be able to pull it back up and …….well you know. So what’s the trick?
About the bottom end, I am inclined to go with historic averages of wear on 200,000 mile engines and not the leak down/compression test. I think that a person with enough background in the 22RE can surmise what is likely to be needed. Also If I choose to not rely on the block I guess I can pull the whole mess from the truck and purchase the short block as well and I’ll be in it for around $1700.00 - $1800.00 in the end. in the end is right.
P.S. truck needs good 7”bed sides too. Thank god I’m a fool for hard luck cases.
