Need help replacing worn stock exhaust
Hello everyone new to the forum but I have owned my 83 Yota PU for about five years. It is short bed 4x4 with an r22. My question is this. The truck still has the OEM exhaust on it. I thinks it's leaking. There is a strong smell of exhaust in the cab and it sounds like it has leak.
Since it may be leaking in a pipe or a can and it is 29 years old I was going to replace the whole thing. The stock pipe is as thin as a soda straw. I was wondering if I should go with a 2 1/2 inch pipe or if 3 inch was too big. Also if I should be looking at something like a flow master muffler. Should I go with a "cat back" type system. I not looking for a tuner sound or anything, just want whats best for performance.

Holy crap, do NOT drive that thing if you can smell exhaust !!!
Don't you know that carbon monoxide (CO) gas is deadly ?
A fair amount of people die and/or are sicken from carbon monoxide poisoning each year...
Regarding the exhaust, stay with the stock diameter pipe.
I don't know why so many people thing that bigger is better regarding exhaust and intake diameters.
You want to smooth out any kinked bends and such but you do NOT want larger diameter.
Those who think you do simply have no idea about gas (exhaust and air etc.) flow dynamics. Going to a larger diameter pipe produces a lower velocity and that's a bad thing, leading to surface reversion and the like.
You want velocity.........
Any muffler will work. If you're looking for a little deeper sound, simply get a "turbo" style muffler. Much less expensive than any "brand name" and will sound a little nicer.

Yeah I roll witht the windows down and the split window open. What the best way to tell where it's leaking from? SO the stock diameter is what I should go with? What about placement. I say this because it flodds a lot around here. Sometimes deep. I was just thinking routing it higher, or is this just dumb?

Summit Racing has mufflers that are almost identical to the flowmaster 40 series for a lot less (the patent went up on the design, a number of companies have been duplicating it for the past year or so). I'm running a 2.5" setup with a high flow cat and a summit muffler. If I was doing it again I would have gone for the 2 1/4 to preserve some back pressure (for going down hills). I ordered the pipe and muffler from Summit and had it next day. Good prices, good stuff, highly recommended.

Thanks for the help. I ordered pipe and now need a muffler. I found the leak it's where the straight pipe off the cat goes into the muffler. The weld is broken. Turns out openeing the split window made it worse. That part of system is right where the cab and bed come together. So the exhaust was comeing up right in between them through the split window. I am supposed to pick up parts today. I broke the bolts loose last night so pulling the old one off will be strait forward.
