Post Rear Licence plate lights

I removed my rear bumper because it was rusted out. I now need to hook up some lights for the rear licence plate but when i use a test light to see where power is nothing happens. Does anyone know which wire is power. There was only one wire going to the lights so i suspect they are self grounding. How can i find out why there isn't power anymore to the wire. The truck is a 93.

uses the license plate bolts to attach and is a simple 2 wire hook-up - available at any AutoRice

*edit* read to fast and missed what you were looking for. If it was just a 1 wire connection, that 1 wire would be power. Are you sure the test light is properly grounded, try a different ground point on the light. stupid question, but did you have the parking lights turned on?

Yea i thought about that i did have the parking lights on. I'm not too concerned with which lights to use as much as why i'm not getting power to the wire.

If the wire has been hanging for awhile you might need to trim it back to good copper.

As stated you might have not had a good ground . I guess you know the test light works.

That is why I don`t think I have used a test light in a longtime You can get a fairly good multimeter for around $50.00
