I pulled my front axle housing and went at it for a complete rebuild.
While I was at it, I wanted to swap in the 4.88 R&Ps I got (also the entire set-up kit).
I'm not comfortable with a gear swap and have been looking around. Even with the third member being pulled no-one wants to cut me a break on the price for the swap. the best I've been told is $300 (per end).
I may be naive but doesn't that seem a bit excessive when they literally have to put it in their stand and just go-to-town?
I had a lot of people tell me that it was very easy to do but I've never done it and all the people that said they could help have suddenly "fallen-ill" or otherwise "forgot" how to do it.


Does anyone know where a guy in MD can go to get this done for a reasonable price and maybe a 6-pack or fifth?

 

$300 per end sounds pretty damn reasonable to me.....

Save yourself headache and $$$. I regeared my 4Runner with a "used, factory, 4.88 diffs". One from a 1993 pickup, one from a 1994 pickup. $200 each delivered. Plug-play, have fun. With the money saved, I added a LSD and a lock-rite. Keep in mind, these are the "special" diffs that cannot be regeared. Weakness?? I did mine in 2003, wheel the piss out of it, never had an issue.
