question about torsion bars
ive got a 91 4x4 truck, when i bought it, it had a smitty bumper on the front that i took off and replaced with a stock one. so my truck rides like crap, like feels alot worse than i think it should, so i looked under it and the torsion bars are cranked up all the way,no more thread visable on the nut. But the truck is completetly level front and back, if the tbars were cranked all the way wouldnt the front be higher than the back? Baisicly now that the bumpers off id like to uncrank the bars a bit, but if i do will the front sit lower than the back? thanks

if you uncrank the bars, you will get a smoother ride.
You will drop the front end.
A possibility is to put in ball joint spacers, and then relax the torsion bars down a bunch, so the truck sits level again.

Downey or rancho are going to be horribly stiff unless you have a heavy winch and bumper.
Old Man Emu makes a set that is a little stiffer than stock, but not nearly as stiff as the rancho/downey set ups.

Lets see a pic of your front a-arms. I had a friend that made the same complaint, when I looked at is front end I saw he was almost sitting on the bump stops. Everytime he hit bumps on the road he was smacking the bump stops.
If your t-bars are fully cranked you should see lots of thread at the top.

yea the bars are just definetly cranked up all the way, the head of the bolt is touching the bracket the bars connected to, the arms dont look too close to the bumpstops. Thanks for all the help with this stuff from everyone, this is my first 4wd, all my trucks before this were either bagged or bodydropped, so all the info on this site is a huge help. i dont post often, but i do read it about everyday. thanks again everyone for all your help
