Unhappy 1988 1 ton will not start when hot

Hi, well I have a 1988 1 ton 2 wheel drive Toyota with a 22r engine, automatic. The serious problem is starting. It is very unreliable. I start it, drive off, engine 'warms' up. I shut off the engine, sometimes it WILL start, other times (mostly) will NOT start. I turn the key, and hear a solid loud "CLICK". The engine does NOT overheat. OK, now before you reply, read what I have done to try to solve this and I STILL have the problem today. OK here goes:
1) I replaced the starter with a new starter, not rebult
2) I replace the starter relay (by drivers left ankle)
3) I replaced all battery cables
4) I replace the battery
5) I took the steering colum apart and cleaned the conections and sprayed CRC 2-226 contact cleaner on them.
6) I checked all wiring for loose or cracked condtions..none found.
7) Jump starting is of no help.
8) I tried with my Headlights ON and they do NOT dim when trying to start
9) I replaced the alternator with a NEW Toyota brand ,not rebuilt.
10) I replaced all belts, and have proper tensions.

OK, I await some miracle to appear from the yotatech wizards..I am stumped.

when you replaced the starter, did you also replace the solenoid? If not, thats your problem. If so, I suspect that still is the problem. I had the same problem and I replaced the contacts in the starter (cost 3 bucks). Heres 4crawler's page on determining and fixing the problem

I had this same issue on my 87 2wd. I have a friend that works for the toyota tech department, he told me that this happens alot on the 84-88 trucks, he said 2 main cause are heat and to small of ground cable from body to batt. I took his advice changed all the grounds to 4 guage cable got a brand new starter and wrapped it in a heat sheild. Thats worked for me, hopefully this helps.

Perform the simple voltage check described below to help isolate the source of the problem:
