Project Yota Rebirth
Hello everyone, I am brand new to the forum but one of my buddies is a member and say's you guys are some cool cats. Anyway lets get to business.
I purchased a 88 toyota pickup 8 months ago with 200 some odd thousand miles on it. I flipped it onto the drivers side in the slush shortly after wards. We flipped it back over, fired it right up and went straight to getting emissions done that day. Enough to say i fell in love with the truck after that and replaced the roof and windshield. But after 4 months and at 230 thousand miles the engine blew. So Im in the middle of rebuilding it with my friend.
We pulled the engine today and found out that the bearing in cylinder 2 was destroyed (ill post pic's later). Anyway, my friend says that I need to get the head machined and the crank. Does anyone know of a cheap place to do that in colorado? Im hesitant to bring it to napa or car quest and pay alot of money for them to ship it somewhere.
Also since ive pulled the thing out I plan to rebuild the engine. Does this kit look like its good enough quality for the price?

I would go through engnbldr.com or 22re.com. There's got to be a good machine shop around you somewhere. There will be members on here who know, if they read your post. I definitely shouldn't need to be shipped somewhere. Where in Colorado are you?

I can always google it, i was just hoping to find someone who has a shop that a buddy works at or that they trust. I prefer to support local shops and not waste money on a crappy one.
I live in evergreen but dont get me wrong, im not rich lol.

So im still lookin for a machine shop but I stumbled upon another question while talking with my dad. He rebuilt a toyota engine for his truck back in the day and he said to have the crank put in by a professional because if its not exact the engine will sieze and all of my work will be for nothing. Is this true?

You can do it any way you want. If you do it right, it will be fine. You can have the machine shop assemble the short block for you, if you're more comfortable with that. It'll cost you more, but it may be worth it if you're really worried about screwing stuff up. Ask around to see where people you know bring their stuff. Is there an auto shop you trust? See who does their machine work. If there's a specialty Toyota repair shop, see who does their machine work.

Kvrunner - I have a book for 89 through 95 pickups, but i figure since its the same engine it really doesnt matter.
I talked to a machine shop that the napa in my town uses. Its gonna be 105 for the crank to be turned and 50 for the heads to be resurfaced. Were goin down today.

Just make sure they know Toyotas. If they're a good shop, they're a good shop, but I actually turned down the shop that the Toyota dealership sent their machine work to, because after a short conversation with them I just couldn't believe they knew anything about Toyotas.
A few months later, I saw their machine shop guy picking up some blocks from the machine shop I decided to go with...I think he was contracting out the "bigger" work to the shop I went with, either because he was too darn fat to be able to move a block himself, or because he didn't know what the heck he was doing so he had a "real" machine shop do it. Anyways, I'm glad I went with who I went with.

I trust the guys at this shop, its two grumpy old men.
I will be ordering that kit tomorrow unless someone says otherwise.
Does anyone know of a place to find a good engine diagram with a good break down of parts and where bolts go? Im going to start organizing the parts while i wait for the machine shop and kit.l

Ok I wont use parts dinosaur after hearing a actual reason why i shouldnt. Thank you.
Turns out the bearing a threw chewed its way into my crank pretty good so I have to order a new crank
but it comes with bearings.

The crank and heads are at a machine shop right now. The guy called me to today and said it would be faster to buy a new crank. But if time wasnt a problem he could send it out to be welded and machined, taking 4 weeks. Since this truck is my main source of transportation, i chose to buy a new crank. Luckily i live in a small town.
