When you replace fluid use atf not power steering fluid. as my powersteering cap says atf only.

Here's my idea which I was planning to do to my 01 Tacoma in the near future. Be adviced ....the fluid flows thru the reservoir at a fairly fast rate so have one or 2 quarts of ATF on standbye. Also, it probably is a 2 person job.

place jack stands under both front wheels such that they are off the ground and steering is extra easy to turn from lock to lock.

Dis-connect return hose and and add an extension to a 1 gallon drain bucket or larger. Have a powerful little flashlight that you can watch the fluid level easily. Have friend start engine and watch the old blackish fluid go down quickly and it will start sucking air. No biggie when it does. The point is the old fluid is out of the reservoir and now you can immediately add clean ATF as quickly as possible. Have the other person move the wheel back and forth from lock to lock and try to keep up with the increased demand. I figure in about 2 quarts you will have all good fluid in the entire system....including all thru the entire steering box because of the lock to lock steering wheel motion.

The lower the idle the better your chances of keeping up with the ATF flow rate....try to lower your idle beforehand.

Oh Ya....do not use power steering fluid in your power steering reservoir.....it will result in the seals leaking. Right on the cap it says USE ATF.
