Painting my hubs

Hello all new to the manual hub scene question I have is, I am getting new wheels soon and they are black. I want to paint the hubs to match but I haven't had the tires off to see how they come apart.

Is the entire hub assembly one piece or is the chrome sleeve separate?

What would be the best time to paint them? I mean can I remove them easy enough while my tires and wheels are getting done and paint them. Is the truck driveable without them on?? Anyway any input is appreciated and thanks in advance.

Disco.

the face plate/dial assembly is a separate piece from the "chrome" hub flange piece. plenty of threads here on YT on taking them apart and painting them if you need that info - should be an easy search.

as for removing them with the wheels installed, you should be ok. I would not recommend you drive without them installed - too many things can go wrong: like contaminants getting inside the rest of the hub to the bearings, the CV popping out and messing up the oil seal, chewing up the splines somehow, grease flinging everywhere on your new wheels, etc.

Cool thanks man! Sounds to me like masking and spraying will be the way to go. On the wheels I'm getting I have to drill hub size hole in the centercap to accept the hub so I might not have to paint the entire thing but we shall see. Wondering if I should do flat or gloss?? Wheels are the black Teflon so somewhat of a matte to them, well I can decide that when everythings together.

I would love to powder them before use, but the wallet isn't my best friend right now just enough to squeeze in the new wheels and tires but............I'm sure the teflon coating isn't as incredible as a good powder coat so when time comes I will be looking to do so, How much does this run I have always been curious??

Waste of money to powdercoat (IMHO). I've used a Dixie cup and cut the bottom out and did a quick spray on the dial. Worked great and the cup circumference matched that of the dial.
